TV has had a long-standing tradition of concluding on breath-taking cliffhangers—but occasionally, the last “To Be Continued” never materializes. From extraterrestrial kidnappings and hidden babies to mysterious vanishing acts and unfinished love stories, these shows left viewers clamoring for closure that never materialized. This list explores 10 of the most infamous unresolved TV cliffhangers, where cancellation halted the narrative short and the mystery remains.

1. Alf (1986–1990)

In the series finale, Alf is mere seconds from being rescued by his extraterrestrial buddies when the U.S. military abruptly apprehends him. At the end of the episode, Alf is shown in government custody, his status entirely uncertain. NBC advertised the finale as “To Be Continued,” but it never was, due to the cancellation of the show.

2. My So-Called Life (1994–1995)

The series concludes with Angela finding a letter from Brian admitting his love for her, while she remains dating Jordan. The emotional triangle hangs in the balance of serious blowback. As things got hot, ABC suddenly pulled the plug after one season.

3. The Sopranos (1999–2007)

The notorious last scene cuts to black in the middle, as tension reaches a boiling point over an impending hit. Speculation plagued viewers: Was Tony Soprano murdered, or did life simply resume? David Chase left no conclusive answers, and the debate continues to simmer today.

4. Pushing Daisies (2007–2009)

The quirky series concluded with Chuck suddenly introducing her not-so-dead self to her aunts, offscreen. That huge moment, which could’ve been a season arc, was crammed into the last seconds of the series. The fans never got to witness the repercussions of her return.

5. Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993–1997)

In the show’s finale, Lois and Clark discover an enigmatic infant in a bassinet with a letter stating that it is theirs. The program had promised during season five that it would touch on this storyline. Instead, it was discontinued without any insight into the child’s background.

6. Twin Peaks (1990–1991)

The original series concludes with Agent Cooper under the influence of the malevolent spirit Bob, battering his head against a mirror. It was a vicious shock with no resolution more than 25 years ago. It wasn’t until the revival of 2017 that the fans received some closure, albeit one that created even more questions.

7. Carnivàle (2003–2005)

Season 2 concludes with Brother Justin seemingly dead and Ben Hawkins fatally wounded—but perhaps soon to be taking in Justin’s powers. The series’ rich mythology suggested that a greater war of good vs. evil was to come. HBO canceled it, slaying the saga.

8. Kyle XY (2006–2009)

The sci-fi teen drama’s season finale ends with the revelation that Kyle possesses a secret brother called Cassidy and was a part of a genetic experiment. Just as Kyle starts exposing the secrets of his birth, the screen goes dark. ABC Family cancelled the show the same year, leaving viewers shocked.

9. FlashForward (2009–2010)

The last episode finishes off with another global blackout—and a glimpse of the future with even more anarchy. The series is cut off when new secrets are unfolding and characters’ destinies are suspended. With a grand vision, ABC did not bring it back for season two.

10. Deadwood (2004–2006)

The show concluded with Al Swearengen washing blood off the floor, representing unresolved corruption and the price of power. HBO cancelled the show before its scheduled fourth season, leaving numerous character arcs undone. Although a movie sequel was released in 2019, it didn’t resolve all the loose ends from the show’s violent cliffhanger.
