The Las Vegas Aces received difficult news ahead of one of their biggest games of the season, as four-time WNBA Most Valuable Player A’ja Wilson was officially ruled out of Tuesday’s Commissioner’s Cup championship against the New York Liberty because of an ankle injury.

Wilson had entered the day listed as questionable after suffering the injury during Sunday’s victory over the Chicago Sky. Although she briefly left that contest before returning to finish the game, the Aces ultimately determined that additional recovery time was necessary, leaving the franchise without its centerpiece in the in-season title game.

Her absence dramatically changes the outlook of a matchup featuring two of the WNBA’s premier contenders. Wilson has been the driving force behind Las Vegas throughout the season, consistently carrying the offensive load while anchoring the team’s defense with elite rebounding and rim protection.

For both organizations, the championship presents an opportunity to capture another Commissioner’s Cup trophy. However, injuries to star players have become a significant storyline, as both the Aces and Liberty entered the contest without key contributors expected to play major roles.

1. Wilson’s Injury Alters Championship Plans

Wilson injured her ankle late in the fourth quarter during Las Vegas’ 107-99 victory over the Chicago Sky. After rolling the ankle, she exited briefly for evaluation before returning to help finish the game, an encouraging sign that initially suggested the injury might not be serious.

Despite the discomfort, Wilson still delivered one of the finest performances of her remarkable career. She finished with 30 points and 15 rebounds, marking the eighth time she has reached at least those totals in the same game, the most such performances by any player in WNBA history.

Following the victory, Wilson sounded optimistic about her condition. She described the injury as a routine ankle issue and expressed confidence that treatment would allow her to recover quickly enough for the Commissioner’s Cup final.

The medical evaluation over the following two days, however, led the Aces to a different conclusion. Rather than risk worsening the injury, Las Vegas elected to prioritize Wilson’s long-term health, ruling her unavailable for one of the season’s marquee events.

2. Aces Lose Their Most Valuable Presence

Wilson’s absence leaves a sizable void in virtually every area of the game. She has once again established herself as one of the league’s dominant players, leading the WNBA in scoring while also ranking among the league leaders in rebounding and blocked shots.

Entering the championship, Wilson was averaging 25.7 points per game, fourth in the league with 9.4 rebounds, and first with two blocks per contest. Those numbers reflect not only her individual brilliance but also her importance to the Aces’ identity on both ends of the floor.

Beyond the statistics, Wilson serves as the emotional leader of the franchise. Her ability to control games through scoring, defense, leadership, and late-game execution has been instrumental in keeping Las Vegas among the league’s elite throughout another successful regular season.

The injury also stands out because Wilson has been remarkably durable throughout her professional career. Across the previous seven seasons, she missed only a handful of games, making her absence from such an important contest an uncommon setback for both the player and the organization.

3. Liberty Face Injury Challenges of Their Own

While Las Vegas entered the game shorthanded, New York was also forced to adjust its rotation. The Liberty were without Satou Sabally, who remained in the league’s concussion protocol and was unavailable for the championship matchup.

Even so, New York entered the contest determined to reverse recent struggles. After dropping four of its previous five games, the Liberty viewed the Commissioner’s Cup final as an opportunity to regain momentum and capture another in-season tournament title.

For the Aces, Wilson’s absence placed added responsibility on the rest of the roster. Players such as Jackie Young, Chelsea Gray, and Kelsey Plum were expected to shoulder larger offensive roles while collectively attempting to replace the production usually provided by the league’s most dominant frontcourt player.

Although the Commissioner’s Cup trophy was the immediate focus, both teams also understood the broader significance of maintaining player health for the remainder of the regular season. Las Vegas hopes Wilson’s absence will be brief, allowing its franchise cornerstone to return fully healthy as the pursuit of another WNBA championship continues.
