Whenever Aaron Rodgers speaks publicly about his future, the NFL world tends to pay close attention. Few players in league history have commanded the spotlight the way Rodgers has throughout his career. Even at 42 years old, the four time MVP remains one of the most fascinating figures in professional football.
For weeks, speculation has swirled about whether Rodgers would return to the Pittsburgh Steelers for another season. The Steelers brought Rodgers in during the 2025 campaign, hoping his experience and leadership could stabilize the franchise during a transitional period.
The team managed to reach the postseason before falling in the Wild Card round, and many observers assumed the organization would attempt to run it back with Rodgers under center.
However, Rodgers made it clear this week that nothing has been decided yet. During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, the veteran quarterback openly discussed where things currently stand with Pittsburgh. His comments offered clarity while also confirming that a final decision may still be some time away.
1. Rodgers Says There Is No Deadline
With the start of NFL free agency approaching, many fans expected Rodgers to reveal that negotiations with Pittsburgh were nearing completion. Instead, the veteran quarterback explained that the process has not even reached that stage yet.
“Well, I mean, we’re sitting here, it’s March 4. Free agency starts in a week,” Rodgers said. He then clarified that there has not been any urgency from the organization for him to make a quick decision. “I’ve talked to Mike. I’ve talked to Omar. There’s been no deadline that’s been put in front of me. No contract offer or anything. Nothing that I’m having to debate between,” Rodgers explained.
Rodgers also emphasized that he currently holds the freedom that comes with being an unrestricted free agent. “I’m a free agent, and again, I’m enjoying my time with my wife, enjoying this part of the offseason.”
The comments suggest that while Pittsburgh remains a possibility, Rodgers is not rushing into anything. With free agency set to begin soon, that uncertainty could leave the Steelers and other interested teams waiting for his next move.
2. Conversations Have Happened, But Nothing Has Progressed
Rodgers acknowledged that he has maintained communication with both head coach Mike McCarthy and Steelers general manager Omar Khan. However, he stressed that the discussions have not yet developed into anything formal.
“I think there’s conversations to be had down the line, but there haven’t been any progressive conversations,” Rodgers said. He added that his past interactions with the organization have been positive and that his time in Pittsburgh was well received.
“I’ve had conversations with Omar. I think Omar enjoyed having me there. I think the guys had a positive response to our time together. But again, there haven’t been any deadlines set on me.”
For now, Rodgers appears comfortable allowing the situation to develop naturally rather than forcing a decision.
3. Rodgers Praises Mike McCarthy
While Rodgers avoided committing to the Steelers, he spoke warmly about his relationship with Mike McCarthy. The two shared more than a decade together with the Green Bay Packers, building one of the most successful quarterback coach partnerships of their era.
Rodgers made it clear that his respect for McCarthy remains strong. “Mike’s one of the great guys in the league,” Rodgers said. “Just an absolutely exceptional human being with a huge heart.” Their relationship was not always perfect during their time in Green Bay, but Rodgers suggested that the mutual respect has never faded.
“We had a lot of great years together, a lot of fun. He really cares about the players. But he also holds guys accountable and creates a lot of structure and details in the process,” Rodgers said. He compared their dynamic to that of family members who occasionally clash but ultimately remain close.
“Obviously there are times where like a big brother, sometimes you love him, sometimes you’re pissed at him. But deep down, there’s so much love for Mike and appreciation for the time we spent together.”Rodgers even went as far as saying that McCarthy is the right leader for Pittsburgh at this moment.
