AJ Dybantsa continues to make an early impression in a Washington Wizards uniform. The No. 1 overall pick delivered another standout performance during NBA Summer League, helping lead the Wizards to a convincing 104-85 victory over the Sacramento Kings in Las Vegas.

The 19-year-old finished with 23 points and once again showcased why Washington views him as the centerpiece of its rebuilding project. Beyond the statistics, however, Dybantsa drew attention with comments about the positive environment developing within the organization.

Speaking after the victory, Dybantsa credited the support he has received from teammates and veterans despite being new to the franchise. He said the willingness of experienced players to embrace younger teammates reflects a changing culture in Washington.

His remarks come as the Wizards continue a long-term rebuild after several difficult seasons. Although the franchise has struggled for sustained success in recent years, there is growing optimism that a talented young core could finally help change its trajectory.

1. A New Culture Takes Shape

Following the win over Sacramento, Dybantsa said the atmosphere around the organization feels different from what many have associated with the Wizards in previous years. According to him, veterans have made a point of welcoming younger players and building a united locker room.

The rookie believes those relationships can become the foundation for future success. Rather than focusing solely on individual development, he emphasized the importance of teammates supporting one another throughout the rebuilding process.

Washington’s front office has spent the past several years reshaping the roster with that goal in mind. After taking control in 2023, team president Michael Winger and general manager Will Dawkins committed to a complete rebuild, moving away from veteran-centered teams in favor of developing young talent.

The strategy required patience. The Wizards endured difficult seasons while accumulating high draft picks and acquiring promising players, positioning themselves to build around Dybantsa and several other emerging prospects.

2. Rebuild Begins to Show Promise

The Wizards’ rebuilding effort has brought significant changes to nearly every part of the roster. Along with drafting Dybantsa, the franchise previously selected Alex Sarr and Tre Johnson while also adding established stars Trae Young and Anthony Davis through trades to provide leadership and experience.

The organization has also assembled an intriguing collection of young contributors, including Bilal Coulibaly, Bub Carrington, Kyshawn George, Will Riley, and several others expected to play important roles moving forward. The combination of experienced veterans and developing prospects has created renewed optimism around the franchise.

That chemistry has been visible throughout Summer League. Players who were not participating in games have consistently attended from the sidelines to cheer on teammates, an uncommon sight during the offseason tournament. The roster also showed its support by attending Trae Young’s introductory press conference after he officially signed his new four-year maximum contract.

Those gestures may not affect the standings, but they have helped establish a stronger sense of unity. For an organization attempting to build a winning culture from the ground up, that level of engagement has been viewed as an encouraging sign heading into the upcoming season.

3. Young Talent Continues to Impress

While Dybantsa remained the headline attraction, he was not the only Wizard to produce an impressive performance against Sacramento. Second-year wing Will Riley delivered one of the best games of his young professional career after erupting in the second half.

Riley finished with a game-high 32 points while shooting efficiently from both the field and three-point range. In addition to his scoring, he collected six rebounds and handed out three assists, displaying the versatile offensive skill set that made him an intriguing first-round selection.

After the game, Riley discussed his efforts to become more comfortable as a playmaker. He explained that he has spent more time handling the ball this year and is working on improving his decision-making, particularly when driving into the paint and finding open teammates.

That development could prove valuable for Washington. At 6-foot-9, Riley has the size to play multiple positions, and increased ball-handling ability could earn him minutes as a secondary playmaker behind Trae Young. With Dybantsa continuing to excel and several other young players making steady progress, the Wizards appear to have assembled a promising foundation as they prepare for another Summer League matchup against the Chicago Bulls.
