A.J. McCarron, the former Alabama and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback, has ended his brief foray into politics, withdrawing from the Alabama lieutenant governor race. The announcement came on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025, less than two months after he launched his campaign.

According to a press release reported by the Alabama Reflector, McCarron is stepping away to pursue a new opportunity in football. “My football position will require the same 100% focus, commitment, and attention that I was prepared to give to the office of lieutenant governor, so it is time to end my campaign,” he said.

McCarron’s political campaign had already drawn scrutiny. Critics pointed to the fact that he had never voted in an election prior to registering three days before announcing his candidacy. The short-lived campaign, therefore, faced questions about experience and public engagement almost from the start.

Despite the withdrawal, McCarron left the door open for a future in politics. He emphasized his desire to create a better Alabama for his family and indicated he may return to public service once his football career is complete.

1. Football Career Resumes

McCarron’s professional football career has been marked by movement between leagues and teams. After a standout tenure at Alabama from 2009 to 2013, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2014, where he spent four seasons. Following his NFL stint, McCarron played with several teams before landing in the XFL with the St. Louis Blackhawks, where he played two seasons. In 2023, he briefly returned to the Bengals before rejoining the Blackhawks. The new role prompting his withdrawal from politics has not been detailed publicly, but it signals that football remains central to McCarron’s career plans. His statement stressed that the commitment required for this opportunity prevents him from giving adequate attention to public office. Returning to the gridiron allows McCarron to continue a career he has pursued professionally for over a decade, while keeping open the possibility of future endeavors outside football.

2. Political Controversy and Criticism

McCarron’s political ambitions were met with immediate scrutiny. Critics highlighted that he had never voted before registering just days prior to launching his campaign, raising questions about his readiness for public office. His brief campaign also drew attention because of his celebrity status from football, prompting discussions about the role of sports figures in politics. Supporters viewed him as a potential fresh voice, while skeptics questioned his experience and policy knowledge. Despite these criticisms, McCarron maintained that his intentions were sincere, framing his campaign as a way to help build a better future for his family and the state of Alabama. The withdrawal does not signal a permanent exit from politics. The situation underscores the unique challenges athletes face when transitioning from sports fame to political life, particularly when public scrutiny and questions about qualifications emerge quickly.

3. Future Possibilities

While McCarron steps away from politics for now, he left the door open for a return. “I have a deep desire to help create an even better Alabama for Tripp, Cash, and Cruz, our three sons that Katherine and I love so much,” he said, “so I may return to the political playing field once my career on the football field has truly run its course.” McCarron’s move back to football allows him to focus fully on a familiar arena, leveraging his experience and skill in a career that has spanned both the NFL and XFL. The timing suggests he views this as a short-term pause rather than a complete career shift. His Alabama roots, combined with his professional football experience, could position him for a future return to public service if he chooses. Political aspirations may resurface once his athletic career stabilizes, giving him time to build expertise and credibility. For now, McCarron will focus on football while leaving open the possibility of balancing future opportunities in sports and politics.
