The Oklahoma City Thunder continued their dominant postseason run Friday night with a convincing 131-108 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, extending their perfect playoff record to 7-0 and taking a commanding 3-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinals.
While Oklahoma City’s established stars once again controlled the game, it was rookie guard Ajay Mitchell who captured much of the attention after delivering the best playoff performance of his young career. Mitchell scored a game-high 24 points and played with a level of confidence that surprised many outside the organization.
Inside the Thunder locker room, however, the performance was viewed less as a breakthrough and more as confirmation of what the team already believed. Following the game, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander described Mitchell as a “gamer,” praising the rookie’s preparation, confidence, and ability to remain composed under pressure.
Mitchell’s emergence added another dimension to an Oklahoma City roster that already appears among the deepest and most balanced teams remaining in the playoffs. As the Thunder move closer to another Western Conference Finals appearance, their growing collection of contributors continues making them increasingly difficult to slow down.
1. Mitchell Delivers Breakout Performance
Game 3 represented a major moment for Mitchell, who looked completely comfortable despite the pressure of a nationally televised playoff game inside a hostile arena. From the opening quarter, the rookie attacked aggressively, finding open space in the Lakers’ defense and finishing confidently around the basket. Mitchell finished with 24 points, the highest total of any player in the game, while consistently providing energy and pace to Oklahoma City’s offense. His ability to create scoring opportunities helped the Thunder maintain offensive rhythm even during stretches when the Lakers attempted to slow the game down. The rookie’s performance also reflected the confidence the coaching staff has shown in him throughout the season. Oklahoma City head coach Mark Daigneault has steadily expanded Mitchell’s role, trusting him in important minutes because of his decision-making and composure. Gilgeous-Alexander made it clear after the game that Mitchell’s performance was not viewed internally as a surprise. According to the Thunder star, the organization recognized Mitchell’s potential from the moment he arrived, and the rookie is now simply proving himself on a larger stage during the postseason.
2. Thunder Continue Functioning As Complete Team
Although Mitchell drew much of the attention, Oklahoma City’s success once again came from its collective execution. The Thunder operated with precision offensively, moving the ball effectively and consistently exposing defensive breakdowns throughout the game. Gilgeous-Alexander remained in complete control of the offense, finishing with 22 points and eight assists while dictating the pace of play. The MVP guard repeatedly created advantages through patience and smart decision-making, allowing teammates to capitalize on open opportunities. Jalen Williams also contributed 18 points as Oklahoma City continued receiving balanced scoring from across the roster. That depth has become one of the Thunder’s greatest strengths during the playoffs, preventing opponents from focusing on stopping any one player. The Lakers struggled to respond defensively once Oklahoma City found rhythm in the second half. Transition defense remained a major issue for Los Angeles, while the Thunder’s spacing and ball movement repeatedly forced defenders out of position. By the fourth quarter, the game had fully shifted in Oklahoma City’s favor.
3. Lakers Facing Historic Pressure
The Lakers now return to the court facing elimination and the possibility of a first-round sweep against one of the league’s fastest-rising contenders. Trailing 3-0 in the series, Los Angeles confronts a situation no NBA team has ever escaped. Rui Hachimura led the Lakers with 21 points, while LeBron James contributed 19 points and eight assists. However, despite solid individual performances, Los Angeles once again struggled to match Oklahoma City’s pace, consistency, and energy over four quarters. One of the biggest concerns for the Lakers has been their inability to contain Oklahoma City’s secondary contributors. While attention naturally centers on Gilgeous-Alexander, players like Mitchell continue taking advantage of defensive lapses and creating momentum-changing plays throughout games. For Oklahoma City, Mitchell’s emergence only strengthens the belief that this team is capable of making a deep championship run. Already undefeated in the playoffs, the Thunder now appear to possess both elite star power and the kind of depth required to survive difficult postseason matchups.
