The University of Alabama made a clear statement about its athletic direction on Wednesday, finalizing contract extensions for two of its most prominent head coaches. The moves reflect continued investment in sustained success across both basketball and football.

Men’s basketball coach Nate Oats received a two-year extension that keeps him in Tuscaloosa through the 2031–32 season. The deal also includes a significant salary increase following another strong campaign.

At the same time, football coach Kalen DeBoer secured a revised contract after guiding the Crimson Tide through a successful postseason run. His extension and raise further solidify Alabama’s leadership structure across its flagship programs.

Both agreements were approved by the university’s Board of Trustees compensation committee, signaling alignment between administrative leadership and athletic performance goals.

1. Oats Rewarded After Sustained Basketball Success

Oats’ new contract increases his average annual salary to $7.25 million, a notable jump from his previous compensation level. The extension ensures he remains one of the highest-paid coaches in college basketball. Under the revised terms, Oats will earn an increase of roughly $1.2 million annually, placing him fourth nationally among college basketball coaches. He now trails only Bill Self, Dan Hurley, and John Calipari in total compensation. The deal also includes a structured buyout provision, valued at $15 million through March 2027 before decreasing to $12 million thereafter. This reflects both job security and long-term program stability. Since taking over, Oats has built Alabama into a consistent national contender, elevating expectations within the program and across the Southeastern Conference.

2. Crimson Tide Basketball’s Rise Under Oats

Oats has compiled a 170–73 record during his tenure, posting a .700 winning percentage across seven seasons. His leadership has resulted in multiple conference championships and deep NCAA Tournament runs. Alabama has won two SEC regular-season titles and two SEC Tournament championships under his guidance. The program has also reached the Sweet 16 five times and advanced to the Final Four once during his tenure. In the 2025–26 season, Alabama finished 25–10 overall and 13–5 in SEC play, marking a fourth consecutive 25-win season, the longest such streak in program history. The Crimson Tide also finished No. 16 in the AP Top 25, extending their streak of four consecutive seasons in the final rankings, a consistency level not seen since the late 1980s and early 1990s.

3. DeBoer Continues Football Momentum

On the football side, DeBoer received a $2 million salary increase, bringing his annual compensation to $12.5 million. His contract extension now runs through the 2033 season. In two seasons leading the program, DeBoer has compiled a 20–8 record while maintaining Alabama’s position among college football’s elite programs. His most recent season included a College Football Playoff appearance during the 2025–26 campaign, reinforcing expectations that the program will remain a national contender. The extension reflects confidence in DeBoer’s ability to sustain success within one of the most high-pressure environments in college sports.
