Alabama football received a boost on Sunday when head coach Kalen DeBoer directly addressed speculation linking him to the Michigan job, firmly denying any intention of leaving the program. The clarification comes amid additional reports that DeBoer is in discussions for a potential contract extension with the Crimson Tide.

According to On3, while talks are ongoing, “nothing has been agreed upon or signed,” signaling that negotiations are in early stages. DeBoer’s focus remains on the upcoming College Football Playoff, where Alabama is set to face Oklahoma in a first-round matchup on December 19.

The Crimson Tide earned the No. 9 seed in the CFP following a 2025 season that saw losses to Georgia, Florida State, and Oklahoma, but a strong overall record secured their playoff berth. Alabama would advance to face the top-seeded Indiana Hoosiers with a victory against Oklahoma.

This marks DeBoer’s second season at Alabama after moving from Washington, where he led the Huskies to a national championship game appearance in 2023, ironically falling to Michigan, the same program he was linked to in recent rumors.

1. Commitment to Alabama

DeBoer’s statement emphasized his satisfaction with life in Tuscaloosa and his full commitment to the Crimson Tide. “My family and I are very happy in Tuscaloosa and remain extremely grateful for the support of President Mohler, Greg Byrne, the board and so many others,” he said. The coach stressed that he has no intention of speaking with other programs, directly addressing speculation linking him to Michigan or even Penn State. “I have not spoken and have no interest in speaking with anyone else about any other job. I am fully committed to this program and look forward to continuing as the head football coach at the University of Alabama,” DeBoer added. DeBoer’s reassurance is significant given the frequency of coaching movement in college football, particularly for programs of Alabama’s stature. His remarks also signal stability for recruiting and team morale as the Crimson Tide prepare for postseason play. The comments underscore DeBoer’s focus on the immediate challenge: preparing Alabama to compete against an Oklahoma squad that defeated them earlier this season, while also maintaining the program’s championship aspirations.

2. Alabama’s Playoff Position

Alabama enters the CFP as the No. 9 seed, facing No. 8 Oklahoma in what is expected to be a closely contested first-round game. A win would set up a matchup with top-seeded Indiana in the next round, giving the Crimson Tide a chance to advance deep into the playoff. Despite falling short in the SEC Championship game against Georgia, Alabama’s body of work throughout the regular season, including marquee victories, earned them a spot in the postseason. Their three losses—to Georgia, Florida State, and Oklahoma—highlighted areas for improvement but did not overshadow their overall success. DeBoer has emphasized preparing his team for high-pressure matchups, noting that postseason games require a heightened level of focus and execution. The upcoming rematch against Oklahoma represents both a test of the team’s resilience and an opportunity for redemption. Alabama’s CFP appearance also reflects the rapid progress DeBoer has made in just two seasons, establishing continuity and competitiveness despite the challenges inherent in transitioning to a new program.

3. Coaching Background and Legacy

Kalen DeBoer’s career trajectory adds context to his commitment to Alabama. Before arriving in Tuscaloosa, he guided Washington to the 2023 national championship game, marking his first College Football Playoff appearance as a head coach. His ties to the Big Ten, including a previous assistant role at Indiana, fueled speculation about potential moves to programs like Michigan and Penn State. However, DeBoer’s roots in the Midwest and his successful start at Alabama suggest a long-term vision for the Crimson Tide. At Alabama, he has quickly built a roster capable of competing at the highest level, blending experienced veterans with high-end recruiting classes. His ability to reach the CFP in just two seasons highlights his coaching acumen and adaptability. Looking ahead, a potential contract extension would solidify DeBoer’s place at Alabama, providing stability for the program and ensuring continuity as the Crimson Tide pursue another national championship.
