The Dallas Wings picked up an important win against the Chicago Sky, but the victory came with a concerning moment early in the game. Veteran forward Alanna Smith was forced to leave the matchup after suffering a face injury during the first quarter.

Smith’s night ended after only five minutes on the court, creating uncertainty for a Dallas team that brought her in to strengthen its defense. The 2025 Defensive Player of the Year joined the Wings this offseason with expectations of providing leadership, toughness, and stability on that end of the floor.

Although her role had fluctuated early in the season, Smith remained an important part of Dallas’ plans. Her defensive ability and experience were viewed as valuable pieces for a team hoping to return to playoff contention.

Despite losing Smith early, the Wings continued to compete and found enough production from the rest of the roster. Dallas made key plays late and escaped with a 93-92 victory over Chicago.

1. Smith’s Injury Creates Concern

Smith’s injury happened during the opening quarter, and the Wings later announced that she would not return for the remainder of the game. The team did not immediately provide additional details about the severity of the injury. The setback was unfortunate for Smith, who entered the season looking to make an impact in her first year with Dallas. After earning Defensive Player of the Year recognition with the Minnesota Lynx in 2025, she arrived with a reputation as one of the league’s top defenders. The Wings acquired Smith because of her ability to guard multiple positions and improve the team’s overall defensive identity. Her presence was expected to help Dallas become more competitive in the Western Conference. With Smith sidelined, the Wings had to adjust quickly. The team relied on its depth and needed other players to step forward in a close game against Chicago.

2. Dallas Finds A Way To Win

Even without Smith available, Dallas showed resilience and delivered one of its more important wins of the season. The game remained competitive throughout, with both teams exchanging momentum. The Wings received contributions from multiple players, with four different players finishing in double figures. That balanced effort helped Dallas overcome the early loss of one of its key defensive pieces. Paige Bueckers led the team’s offensive attack with 19 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, two steals, and a block. She also provided control in important moments as Dallas fought to protect the lead. Jessica Shepard added a team-high 21 points along with eight rebounds, while Azzi Fudd scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Arike Ogunbowale contributed 12 points and three rebounds to help secure the victory.

3. Wings Continue Strong Season

The win improved Dallas’ record to 10-6, placing the team fourth in the Western Conference standings. The Wings have positioned themselves among the conference’s stronger teams early in the season. Dallas currently sits ahead of teams such as the Portland Fire and Los Angeles Sparks while continuing to chase higher positions behind the Golden State Valkyries and Las Vegas Aces. The victory showed the depth of the roster and the ability to overcome challenges. While Smith’s injury remains a storyline to monitor, the Wings proved they can find different ways to win. Dallas will now turn its attention toward its next matchup on the road against the Seattle Storm. The team will hope for positive news regarding Smith’s recovery while continuing its push in the Western Conference race.
