Alyssa Thomas is not accustomed to seeing her team struggle this early in a season. The Phoenix Mercury entered a challenging stretch with a 4-11 record, a position that has created frustration and urgency inside the locker room.

After an impressive opening performance, the Mercury have struggled to maintain momentum. The biggest concern has been the team’s defense, an area Thomas has repeatedly identified as the main reason behind their inconsistent results.

Several factors have contributed to Phoenix’s difficulties, including limited practice time, injuries to important players such as Sami Whitcomb, and the absence of Monique Akoa Makani while she completes overseas commitments. Still, Thomas has made it clear that those circumstances cannot become excuses.

The veteran forward believes improvement must begin with accountability and effort. For Thomas, fixing the Mercury’s defensive problems requires a collective commitment from players and coaches to compete with more consistency.

1. Defense Becomes Major Concern

Thomas has built her reputation as one of the league’s strongest two-way players, especially because of her defensive leadership. Throughout her career, she has been part of teams known for their toughness and ability to limit opponents. That experience makes Phoenix’s current struggles especially frustrating. The Mercury have not shown the same defensive intensity that has defined many of Thomas’ previous teams, leaving the veteran searching for solutions. Following practice, Thomas pointed directly to defense as the biggest issue facing the team. She emphasized that improvement starts with personal responsibility, learning from mistakes, and having the desire to compete. For Thomas, defense is not only about schemes or strategy. She believes it begins with pride and the willingness to make difficult plays, especially during moments when games are decided.

2. Building Accountability In Phoenix

The Mercury’s current situation also reflects the adjustment period between different basketball philosophies. Thomas spent much of her career in Connecticut under a system that emphasized defensive discipline and physical play. During her time with the Connecticut Sun, head coach Stephanie White helped establish a defensive identity that matched Thomas’ strengths. That foundation became a major part of the team’s success. Phoenix head coach Nate Tibbetts brought a different approach when he joined the organization, emphasizing spacing, movement, and offensive creativity influenced by his NBA background. The transition required players to adapt to new responsibilities. Although the Mercury showed defensive improvement during the previous season, maintaining that standard has been difficult this year. Thomas believes the answer involves everyone accepting responsibility and committing to the process.

3. Coaches And Players Share Responsibility

Thomas also acknowledged that accountability must come from both sides. Players have to execute, but coaches play an important role in setting expectations and creating the structure needed for success. She explained that when coaches hold players accountable, it makes it easier for teammates to demand the same level of effort from each other. In her view, leadership works best when everyone is aligned. Tibbetts agreed with Thomas’ assessment and emphasized that accountability is about consistently doing what is required. He acknowledged that perfection is unrealistic but believes the team must move closer to its standard. The Mercury still have time to improve, but the urgency is increasing. If Phoenix cannot compete with greater effort and defensive focus for a full 40 minutes, the team risks allowing frustration to grow along with its struggles.
