Alyssa Thomas has spent her WNBA career building a reputation as one of the sport’s most complete players. On Monday night in Minneapolis, the Phoenix Mercury forward added another milestone to a résumé already filled with historic accomplishments.

Although Phoenix fell 104-100 to the Minnesota Lynx at Target Center, Thomas delivered another signature all-around performance. She finished with 19 points, 12 assists, and eight rebounds in a game that remained competitive from opening tip to final buzzer.

The contest itself was among the most entertaining of the WNBA season. The two teams combined for 23 lead changes and 13 ties, with neither side able to create significant separation until the closing moments. Kahleah Copper led Phoenix in scoring with 26 points, but Minnesota ultimately secured its third consecutive home victory.

Lost amid the result, however, was Thomas’ entry into one of the league’s most exclusive statistical groups. By recording her 12th assist of the evening, she surpassed 2,000 career assists and joined Hall of Famer Diana Taurasi as the only players in WNBA history to accumulate at least 4,000 points, 2,000 rebounds, and 2,000 assists.

1. Another Historic Achievement

Thomas’ latest accomplishment serves as a reflection of the unique skill set that has defined her career. Few players in league history have demonstrated the ability to impact games in as many ways as the Mercury veteran.

Unlike many stars who specialize in scoring, Thomas has built her legacy through versatility. She routinely serves as a primary playmaker, controls the glass, and takes on difficult defensive assignments while maintaining a consistent offensive presence.

Her 19-point, 12-assist performance against Minnesota exemplified that approach. Even while falling just short of another triple-double, Thomas once again showcased why she remains one of the WNBA’s most valuable players.

The significance of joining Taurasi in the record books cannot be overstated. Taurasi, who retired following the 2024 season after spending two decades with Phoenix, remains the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer. Sharing a milestone with one of the greatest players in league history further solidifies Thomas’ standing among basketball’s elite.

2. A Career Defined by Versatility

Thomas’ place in WNBA history extends well beyond Monday night’s milestone. Throughout her career, she has consistently produced at a level few players have been able to match.

She currently holds the league records for both regular-season and playoff triple-doubles, a testament to her ability to contribute across every statistical category. Whether initiating offense or battling for rebounds, Thomas has repeatedly demonstrated an uncommon understanding of the game.

Her durability has been equally impressive. Despite the physical demands associated with her style of play, Thomas has remained one of the league’s most reliable performers, regularly logging significant minutes against opposing teams’ top players.

That consistency has made her indispensable to every team she has represented. Since arriving in Phoenix, Thomas has embraced a leadership role, helping guide a roster that blends experienced veterans with emerging talent. Even in difficult stretches, her impact remains evident on nearly every possession.

3. Bright Spot During Challenging Season

While Thomas celebrated a personal milestone, the Mercury continue to search for answers during a difficult campaign. Monday’s loss dropped Phoenix to 8-17 on the season and marked the team’s fourth consecutive defeat.

Minnesota’s stars proved too much to overcome. Kayla McBride delivered an outstanding performance with 37 points, while Olivia Miles added 33 to help the Lynx maintain their strong home form.

Still, Thomas’ achievement offered a reminder of the caliber of player Phoenix has at its disposal. Even as the team navigates a challenging season, the veteran forward continues to produce at a historic level and provide stability in critical moments.

For Mercury fans, there is also a symbolic element to the milestone. Taurasi spent her entire professional career in Phoenix and became synonymous with the franchise. Thomas now finds herself linked with the Hall of Famer through one of the league’s rarest accomplishments, further strengthening her own legacy within the organization.
