Amen Thompson may not yet have the accolades that accompany the NBA’s brightest young stars, but his impact on the court is becoming harder to overlook. Each week, the Houston Rockets guard seems to deliver another sequence that reminds fans and opponents alike why he is considered one of the league’s most dynamic rising talents.

Tuesday night at Toyota Center offered the latest example. In front of a lively home crowd, Thompson supplied energy plays on both ends as the Rockets handled the Los Angeles Clippers and continued one of the strongest stretches of their season.

The victory pushed Houston’s record to 33-9, including an impressive 18-6 mark at home, reinforcing the club’s emergence as a legitimate contender in the Western Conference. While veterans and established scorers provided stability, it was Thompson’s athleticism and hustle that repeatedly shifted momentum.

For a player still only 23 and in his third year, performances like these are increasingly becoming the norm rather than the exception.

1. A Highlight That Shifted the Game

The defining moment came midway through the third quarter. With the shot clock winding down, Jabari Smith Jr. launched a contested jumper that clanged off the rim, appearing to end the possession. Instead, Thompson exploded off the floor. He soared above the traffic, snatched the rebound and powered home a putback dunk over defender Kris Dunn, igniting the arena and forcing the Clippers to regroup. It was the type of play that doesn’t always show up fully in the stat sheet but changes the temperature of a game. Teammates fed off the surge, the crowd roared, and Houston’s pace immediately picked up. By the end of the night, Thompson’s numbers were efficient and steady — 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting with six rebounds — but the highlight served as a reminder of how quickly he can tilt momentum with sheer athleticism.

2. Growth Beyond Athleticism

Thompson’s physical tools have never been in question. His speed, length and leaping ability make him one of the most explosive players on the floor on any given night. What has separated this season from the previous two, however, is how his game has matured beyond highlight plays. Houston has increasingly trusted him as a primary ball-handler, asking him to initiate offense and create for teammates. The transition hasn’t always been flawless — there are still moments of unpredictability — but the progress is evident. Thompson has embraced the responsibility, improving his decision-making and reading defenses with more confidence. The results are reflected in the numbers. He is posting career highs across the board, averaging 17.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.4 steals, a stat line that illustrates his versatility and growing two-way influence.

3. Rockets Close the Door

Los Angeles made a late push in the fourth quarter, attempting to erase Houston’s lead with a flurry of baskets. But each time the Clippers threatened, the Rockets responded with timely execution. A key stretch came when Houston rebuilt separation with a 12-point cushion midway through the final period, punctuated by a three-pointer from rookie Reed Sheppard that quieted the comeback attempt. Veterans also delivered. Kevin Durant paced the offense with 26 points despite an uneven shooting night, while Alperen Şengün added 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists to anchor the interior. With contributions coming from throughout the roster and Thompson providing consistent energy, Houston maintained control down the stretch and secured another win before a quick rematch with the Clippers the following night.
