Andrew Body, the dynamic playmaker for Alabama State, has confirmed he will return to the Hornets for his senior season after briefly entering the transfer portal. Head coach Eddie Robinson Jr. emphasized the value of Body’s experience, leadership, and versatility, noting the benefits of having a proven leader back as the team welcomes new players.
Body first announced his portal entry in mid-December, sharing on social media that 36 schools—including Notre Dame, Florida, UCF, Penn State, and Vanderbilt—had shown interest in his talents. Speculation swirled over whether an FBS program would secure the multitalented athlete, who has played quarterback, wide receiver, and rusher.
Despite the attention from larger programs, Body’s decision to stay with Alabama State provides a boost to the Hornets as they prepare for National Signing Day on February 4. His return also comes as Alabama State finalizes its coaching staff, including the recent hiring of Tony Hull as offensive coordinator.
Body first arrived at Alabama State from Texas Southern in January 2024, immediately showing his versatility. While a 2024 injury limited him to a single game, he proved his potential as a “Swiss Army knife” on the field, demonstrating skills that have kept him in high regard within the SWAC.
1. Early Impact at Alabama State
Body debuted for Alabama State in the 2024 Orange Blossom Classic against North Carolina Central. In that single game, he lined up as both quarterback and wide receiver, also leading the team in rushing with 134 yards. Unfortunately, an injury cut his season short, sidelining him for the remainder of the year. Despite the limited time on the field, Body left an immediate impression as a versatile and dynamic playmaker. His ability to contribute in multiple roles showcased the type of athlete capable of impacting every facet of Alabama State’s offense. The Hornets’ staff recognized the potential for Body to grow into a leadership role, especially as the roster underwent changes. His early contributions laid the groundwork for the team to rely on him as a cornerstone of the offense moving forward. Body’s adaptability and leadership would become central to Alabama State’s planning, providing confidence that he could mentor younger teammates while continuing to produce at a high level.
2. 2025 Breakout Season
Body returned to full health for the 2025 season and quickly established himself as one of the SWAC’s premier players. He threw for 1,770 yards and 20 touchdowns with just one interception before suffering another injury late in the season against Prairie View A&M. In addition to his passing prowess, Body contributed 518 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground, further demonstrating his dual-threat capabilities. His performance kept Alabama State competitive for a SWAC championship berth, highlighting his value as a versatile offensive weapon. Coaches and teammates praised Body’s ability to lead both on and off the field. His unique combination of athleticism and football IQ allowed him to make plays in multiple roles, giving the Hornets flexibility in game planning. Even after his mid-season injury, Body’s impact remained evident. His experience and versatility became a key factor in shaping Alabama State’s offensive strategy for 2026, particularly with a new coordinator in place.
3. Return to Leadership
With Body’s decision to stay, Alabama State gains both talent and leadership heading into the 2026 season. Head coach Eddie Robinson Jr. highlighted Body’s ability to guide younger players and serve as a stabilizing presence amidst roster changes. Body’s familiarity with the Hornets’ system and his experience in multiple offensive positions make him a pivotal part of Alabama State’s plans. He is expected to play a central role in implementing Tony Hull’s offensive schemes while mentoring new talent. Returning to Alabama State also positions Body as a potential candidate for conference honors and national recognition. His combination of production, versatility, and leadership could make him one of the most influential players in the SWAC. As the Hornets prepare for spring practices and National Signing Day, Body’s presence ensures continuity, strengthens the team’s leadership core, and increases expectations for a deep postseason run in 2026.
