Andy Kotelnicki Explains Emotional Decision Behind Return to Kansas Football

Kansas football made headlines this offseason with a series of key additions aimed at reshaping its offensive identity, including transfer running back Dylan Edwards. However, the program’s most significant move came on the coaching staff rather than the roster.

The Jayhawks landed former Penn State offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki, a hire that immediately elevated expectations for a program looking to build on recent progress under head coach Lance Leipold.

Kotelnicki’s decision drew attention across college football, particularly because he turned down multiple opportunities, including the chance to remain in State College or follow former Penn State leadership elsewhere.

Instead, he opted for a return to Lawrence, where he previously helped guide Kansas’ offensive development during a successful stretch earlier in his career.

1. Four Reasons Behind the Decision

Speaking with On3/Rivals reporter Pete Nakos, Kotelnicki outlined four primary factors that led him back to Kansas. At the top of his list was the opportunity to make a meaningful impact within a program on the rise. He also emphasized the importance of joining a place where he believed sustained winning was realistic and attainable, rather than a short-term rebuild or transitional situation. Another key factor was the people around the program. Kotelnicki said he wanted to work with individuals who share a growth mindset, both among coaches and players committed to continuous development. Finally, he pointed to family considerations, noting that personal happiness and stability played a role in making the move back to Kansas feel like the right decision.

2. A Familiar Program With New Expectations

Kotelnicki’s return to Kansas carries added significance because of his previous tenure with the program. He served as offensive coordinator for the Jayhawks from 2021 to 2023 under head coach Lance Leipold. During that span, he helped guide Kansas through one of its most notable recent turnarounds, contributing to the program’s offensive resurgence and overall competitiveness in the Big 12. His familiarity with the staff, system, and culture provided a foundation that made the transition smoother and more natural compared to starting fresh elsewhere. That existing relationship with Leipold and the program’s leadership helped solidify Kansas as a destination that aligned with both professional and personal priorities.

3. Experience, Growth, and Program Trajectory

Kotelnicki arrives in Lawrence with added experience gained at the highest levels of college football, including a run to the College Football Playoff semifinals with Penn State during the 2024 season. That postseason exposure has strengthened his résumé and added new layers to his offensive approach, which Kansas will now look to integrate into its evolving system. The Jayhawks are aiming to rebound from a 5-7 season in 2025, seeking to build consistency after showing both growth and inconsistency in recent years. Kansas previously improved from a 2-10 record in Kotelnicki’s first year of involvement to 6-7 and then 9-4 in subsequent seasons, illustrating the upward trajectory the program hopes to recapture.
