The Orlando Magic found themselves in a fast-paced, high-scoring battle with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday, but the game took a troubling turn early when one of their emerging young guards went down with an injury.

Anthony Black, who has been an important part of Orlando’s rotation this season, exited the contest just minutes after it began. The guard appeared to suffer a lower back strain, forcing him to leave the floor after playing only briefly at the Target Center.

The injury was particularly concerning given that Black had already been dealing with physical setbacks recently. He entered the game managing a quad issue that he sustained earlier in the week against the Washington Wizards.

With the Magic competing for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference, any absence from a key contributor could impact their momentum. For now, the team and its fans are left waiting for clarity regarding the severity of Black’s latest injury.

1. Early Exit in Minnesota

Black’s night ended almost as quickly as it began. Just two minutes into the game, the third-year guard experienced discomfort and was unable to continue playing, leaving the Magic short-handed early in the matchup. Initial reports indicated that the injury was unrelated to the quad issue he carried into the game. Instead, the setback was identified as a lower back strain, a problem that can sometimes linger depending on its severity. Before leaving the court, Black managed to contribute briefly during his short stint. He grabbed one rebound and recorded a steal on defense, though he did not score during his limited time on the floor. His stat line also included two missed free throws before the injury forced him out. While the numbers themselves were minimal, the bigger concern for Orlando was losing a key guard almost immediately after tipoff.

2. A History of Injury Challenges

Unfortunately for Black, injuries have occasionally interrupted his development throughout his young career. This latest setback adds to a list of physical challenges that have followed him since his college days. Before entering the NBA, Black experienced an ankle injury while playing at Arkansas. During a matchup against Texas A&M, he rolled his ankle but attempted to continue competing despite the discomfort. That toughness became part of his reputation during his lone collegiate season in Fayetteville. After demonstrating strong potential as a versatile guard, he declared for the 2023 NBA Draft. Orlando selected Black with the sixth overall pick that year, believing his size, defensive instincts, and playmaking ability could make him a foundational piece of the franchise’s future. While he has shown flashes of that potential, staying healthy has remained an ongoing challenge.

3. Key Contributor for a Playoff Push

Despite the injury setbacks, Black has continued to grow into an important part of Orlando’s young core. Under head coach Jamahl Mosley, the guard has expanded his role and produced some of the best numbers of his career this season. Black entered the Minnesota game averaging 15.5 points per contest, a new career high. His offensive development has complemented the Magic’s defensive identity and added another scoring option in the backcourt. Earlier in the season, he showcased that scoring ability in a standout performance against Washington. On December 26, Black erupted for 23 points against the Wizards, one of several games that highlighted his continued progress. Orlando arrived in Minnesota with a 33-28 record, positioning the team eighth in the Eastern Conference standings. With the Magic pushing to climb into the top six and secure a direct playoff berth, the health of young contributors like Black could play a significant role in how the remainder of the season unfolds.
