The Dallas Mavericks enter Thursday night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers searching for stability after a narrow 125–122 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers dropped their record to 12–22. The defeat continued a difficult stretch for a team still trying to establish momentum in the middle of a turbulent season.
There was, however, a welcome development on Wednesday. Anthony Davis was not listed on the NBA injury report, signaling that he is expected to be available after missing time with a groin injury.
For a roster that has been stretched thin by injuries, Davis’ return offers a rare sense of optimism. His presence immediately changes the complexion of the frontcourt and provides a focal point on both ends of the floor.
The timing could hardly be better, with Philadelphia arriving in Dallas for an 8:30 p.m. EST tipoff and the Mavericks eager to show signs of life before the schedule tightens further.
1. Davis Back in the Fold
Davis’ absence in recent games left Dallas scrambling for interior stability, forcing the coaching staff to rely heavily on patchwork lineups and inexperienced bigs. The groin issue that sidelined him has now apparently subsided, at least enough for the Mavericks to clear him for game action. His removal from the injury report is the clearest indication yet that he is ready to go. Beyond the numbers he brings, Davis offers defensive versatility and rim protection that Dallas has sorely lacked. When he is on the floor, the Mavericks are far more capable of controlling the paint and contesting shots at the basket. His return also allows the offense to reset around a familiar structure, something the team has struggled to maintain while juggling health concerns.
2. Trade Noise in the Background
Even as he works his way back into the lineup, Davis continues to be mentioned in trade speculation — an almost unavoidable byproduct of his profile and Dallas’ uneven season. Around the league, whispers about potential roster moves have followed him, threatening to create a distraction during a period when the Mavericks can least afford it. Davis, however, is no stranger to this environment. As a veteran with championship experience, he has navigated similar situations before and understands how to separate performance from rumor. For Dallas, the hope is that his focus remains on the immediate task at hand: stabilizing a team that has too often found itself on the wrong side of close games.
3. A Shorthanded Mavericks Roster
While Davis’ return is significant, the injury report still paints a sobering picture. Dallas will list five players as unavailable or uncertain for Thursday’s contest. Moussa Cisse is questionable on a two-way assignment, while Miles Kelly is considered doubtful. More notably, Kyrie Irving remains out following left knee surgery, depriving the Mavericks of one of their primary offensive engines. The frontcourt is also depleted. Dereck Lively II is sidelined after right foot surgery, and Dante Exum continues to recover from a right knee procedure, leaving Dallas short-handed at multiple positions. Against a Philadelphia team that thrives on physicality and depth, the Mavericks will need to lean heavily on Davis and the remaining healthy rotation to reverse recent trends.
