The Indianapolis Colts’ offseason has taken another turn following the release of veteran cornerback Kenny Moore, a long-tenured defensive starter who had been with the franchise for nearly a decade. While that move signaled a shift in roster direction, attention quickly returned to another key storyline involving quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Richardson, the Colts’ former No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, remains on the roster despite reportedly requesting a trade earlier in the offseason. The situation has created ongoing uncertainty around his long-term future in Indianapolis, especially as the team evaluates its quarterback depth heading into the new season.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, both Richardson and the Colts have discussed potential trade scenarios. However, no agreement has come close to completion, and the quarterback continues to participate in team activities while the situation remains unresolved.

Fowler also noted that Richardson has shown “good progress” during workouts, suggesting that despite the trade request, his development and involvement with the team have not stalled entirely as Indianapolis evaluates its options.

1. Trade Request Has Not Led To Movement

Richardson’s request for a trade marked a significant development in what has already been a complicated start to his NFL career. Drafted as a franchise quarterback with the expectation of long-term development, his time in Indianapolis has instead been defined by inconsistency, injuries, and flashes of potential that have yet to fully align. Despite his early struggles, Richardson’s athletic traits and arm strength have continued to generate interest. However, teams exploring a possible trade appear to have been unwilling to meet the Colts’ expectations or commit the necessary value to complete a deal at this stage. Fowler’s reporting indicated that while discussions have taken place, neither side has found a suitable trade package. As a result, Richardson remains with the team for now, continuing offseason work while his future remains uncertain. The Colts’ willingness to even consider trade scenarios reflects a broader evaluation of their quarterback room. With Daniel Jones reportedly positioned to take on a significant role, Richardson’s standing within the organization appears less secure than when he was first drafted just two years ago.

2. Colts Maintain Position As QB Situation Evolves

Despite speculation surrounding a potential exit, Indianapolis has not taken steps toward releasing Richardson. Instead, the organization appears to be maintaining flexibility while monitoring both his development and the market for possible trade interest. NFL insider Stephen Holder reported that Richardson returned to the Colts’ facility for voluntary offseason workouts after spending time away from the team. His return signals that, at least for now, he remains part of the team’s plans while discussions continue behind the scenes. Holder also noted that there has been no meaningful progress toward a trade and no indication that a release is being considered. That leaves Richardson in a holding pattern as the Colts continue to assess their quarterback situation moving forward. The presence of multiple quarterbacks on the roster adds further complexity. Indianapolis appears to be evaluating competition at the position, with Richardson no longer viewed as an uncontested long-term starter. Instead, his role has shifted into one that must be earned amid internal competition.

3. Uncertain Future For Former Top Pick

Richardson’s career in Indianapolis has been marked by both promise and disruption since being selected third overall in 2023 out of Florida. His physical tools have drawn attention, but injuries and inconsistent play have limited his ability to establish himself as a dependable starter. At times, Richardson has demonstrated the type of dynamic playmaking ability that initially made him a high draft pick. However, those moments have been offset by developmental growing pains that are common for young quarterbacks adjusting to the NFL level. The possibility of a fresh start has been widely discussed, particularly after his trade request became public. For Richardson, a new environment could offer a reset and potentially a clearer path to a starting opportunity, depending on the landing spot and team situation. Still, with no trade finalized and Richardson back in Indianapolis for now, the situation remains unresolved. His participation in offseason workouts suggests some level of continued professionalism, but it does not eliminate uncertainty about what comes next.
