Argentina continued its impressive march through the 2026 FIFA World Cup by defeating Switzerland 3-1 after extra time in a hard-fought quarterfinal on Saturday. The defending champions once again showcased their composure under pressure, producing a decisive late surge to secure a place in the tournament’s final four.

For much of the evening, Switzerland proved to be one of Argentina’s toughest opponents of the competition. Organized defensively and dangerous on the counterattack, the Swiss matched the South American giants for long stretches and forced the match beyond the 90-minute mark.

The breakthrough eventually came through Argentina’s depth and attacking quality. Julián Alvarez and Lautaro Martínez each found the net during extra time, turning a tense contest into another memorable victory for the reigning world champions.

With the result, Argentina remains unbeaten in the tournament and now prepares for a highly anticipated semifinal showdown against England. On the opposite side of the bracket, France and Spain will battle for the other spot in the World Cup final.

1. Switzerland Pushes Argentina to the Limit

Argentina entered the quarterfinal riding a wave of momentum after impressive knockout-stage victories, but Switzerland quickly demonstrated it would not be an easy path to the semifinals. The European side stayed disciplined defensively while creating enough opportunities to keep Argentina from settling into its preferred rhythm.

The defending champions opened the scoring during the first half through Alexis Mac Allister, whose well-timed header rewarded Argentina’s early pressure. The goal gave Lionel Scaloni’s side an advantage, but Switzerland continued to compete confidently rather than retreat into a defensive shell.

That persistence paid off after halftime. Dan Ndoye produced an excellent finish to bring Switzerland level, silencing Argentina’s supporters and forcing the favorites to regroup. The equalizer shifted momentum and raised the possibility of one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.

As regulation came to an end, neither side managed to produce another breakthrough despite several promising attacks. The match headed into extra time with everything still to play for, setting the stage for Argentina’s biggest test of the competition.

2. Alvarez and Martinez Deliver in Extra Time

When the pressure reached its highest point, Argentina’s experienced attackers stepped forward. The defending champions maintained their composure throughout extra time and gradually regained control through patient possession and sustained attacking pressure.

Julián Alvarez produced the decisive moment with a superb finish into the upper corner of the net. His strike restored Argentina’s lead and shifted the momentum firmly in favor of the reigning champions, who suddenly appeared energized after spending much of the match locked in a tense battle.

Switzerland attempted to respond with another equalizer, but Argentina’s defense remained organized during the closing minutes. As the Swiss pushed numbers forward, spaces began to appear, allowing Argentina opportunities to attack on the counter.

Lautaro Martínez removed any remaining doubt by adding a late insurance goal. His finish sealed the 3-1 victory and ensured Argentina’s place in another World Cup semifinal, highlighting the squad’s ability to rely on multiple attacking stars when the biggest moments arrive.

3. Defending Champions Eye Another World Cup Crown

Argentina now advances with six victories in six matches, continuing one of the tournament’s most impressive campaigns. The team has scored 17 goals while conceding only six, reflecting a balanced combination of attacking firepower and defensive stability.

Lionel Messi has once again played a central role in the nation’s success, leading the tournament with eight goals. However, Argentina’s strength has extended well beyond its captain, with Martínez, Alvarez and several other teammates contributing important goals throughout the competition.

That offensive balance has become one of Argentina’s greatest advantages. Rather than depending on one player, the reigning champions have consistently received timely contributions from across the squad, making them one of the most difficult teams left in the tournament to defend.

The next challenge promises to be even greater as Argentina prepares to face England in a marquee semifinal clash. With confidence growing, momentum building and another World Cup title within reach, the defending champions will attempt to move one step closer to earning a fourth star and providing another unforgettable chapter in their football history.
