The Arizona Wildcats are entering the 2026 season with one of the most talented rosters in the Big 12, following a 9-4 campaign capped by a Holiday Bowl loss. The program retained the majority of its key contributors while supplementing the roster with strategic additions, the latest being running back Antwan Roberts.

Roberts spent the past two seasons at Marshall before entering the transfer portal. His move to Arizona reunites him with Seth Doege, his former offensive coordinator at Marshall, who now oversees the Wildcats’ offense in Tucson. The familiarity between player and coach is expected to ease Roberts’ transition and allow him to contribute immediately.

While Arizona’s running back room is not an area of pressing need—with two of its top three rushers returning and several talented first-year players ready to step up—adding Roberts provides depth and versatility. His skill set gives the Wildcats more options for multiple personnel packages and rotational strategies.

Roberts’ 2025 campaign marked his most productive season to date, rushing for 512 yards and four touchdowns on 90 carries. Originally a three-star recruit at Wisconsin, Roberts never saw game action there and transferred to Marshall in search of playing time, where he steadily developed into a capable contributor.

1. Depth and Opportunity in Tucson

Arizona’s running back room has undergone changes in the coaching ranks, with Lyle Moevao taking over after Alonzo Carter departed for Sacramento State. Roberts’ addition ensures the room remains competitive and deep despite these transitions. The Wildcats are losing Ismail Mahdi, but the backfield still features returning contributors Quincy Craig, Kedrick Reescano, Wesley Yarborough, and Cornelius Warren. Each player brings a unique skill set, from power running to pass protection, giving the staff flexibility in game planning. Roberts’ familiarity with Doege’s system should allow him to integrate quickly into practice and game situations. This continuity reduces the learning curve that often accompanies transfers, positioning Roberts to make an immediate impact in 2026. Additionally, the Wildcats signed 3-star recruit Brandon Smith in the 2026 class, adding another young option to complement the veterans. Roberts’ arrival strengthens the balance between experience and youth in the backfield, allowing for a mix of production and developmental opportunities.

2. Roberts’ Journey and Fit

Roberts’ path from Wisconsin to Marshall and now Arizona highlights his persistence and adaptability. Despite limited opportunities early in his college career, he steadily improved and showcased his abilities in 2025, demonstrating vision, agility, and scoring potential. At 512 yards and four touchdowns, Roberts proved he can handle a significant workload while contributing in multiple offensive situations. His familiarity with Doege’s offensive philosophy is an added bonus, ensuring that both the player and coaching staff can maximize his strengths. The move also provides Roberts with a larger stage to demonstrate his skills. Competing in the Big 12 offers him a chance to face higher-level defenses and showcase his abilities to NFL scouts, should he continue to progress. For Arizona, Roberts’ arrival signals a commitment to maintaining one of the deepest and most versatile backfields in the conference. His skill set, combined with the returning corps, gives the Wildcats a formidable rotation capable of sustaining a high-level rushing attack.

3. Wildcats’ Transfer Strategy

Roberts is the 20th transfer portal addition for Arizona under head coach Brent Brennan and the 10th offensive pickup. These moves reflect a deliberate strategy of roster stability and talent infusion, blending experienced transfers with homegrown recruits. The overall approach has allowed Arizona to maintain continuity while upgrading key positions, providing depth at running back, offensive line, and skill positions. The return of Noah Fifita, along with Roberts and other newcomers, ensures a strong foundation heading into the 2026 season. Arizona’s transfer strategy is increasingly paying dividends. By targeting players familiar with coaching systems and capable of immediate contributions, Brennan is minimizing the typical adjustment period for incoming athletes. This approach keeps the team competitive while developing younger talent. With Roberts added to the mix, the Wildcats now possess one of the most complete and flexible backfields in the Big 12, positioning the team to maintain its upward trajectory and compete for a conference championship in 2026.
