The Houston Astros have added outfielder Daniel Johnson Jr. back into their organization, signing him to a minor league contract after a short stay in the majors earlier this season. The move was confirmed through MLB.com’s transaction log, marking another chapter in Johnson’s ongoing effort to secure a consistent role at the top level.
Johnson had recently elected free agency after being designated for assignment on May 4, but his time on the open market was brief. He is now expected to report to Triple-A Sugar Land, where he will continue his push to return to the major league roster.
His return to Houston follows a period of frequent movement across multiple organizations, reflecting both his versatility as a depth outfielder and the challenges he has faced in maintaining a stable MLB position.
While his latest stint in the majors was limited, the Astros’ decision to bring him back suggests they still see value in his experience and minor league production.
1. Recent MLB and Minor League Movement
Johnson’s most recent professional stretch began after he signed a minor league deal with the Miami Marlins in late December 2025. That opportunity was short-lived, as he struggled at the Triple-A level with Jacksonville. In five games for Jacksonville, he went 1-for-15 with a single walk before being released in early April. The brief performance led to another transition, this time back into free agency. Shortly after, he joined the Astros organization and was assigned to Triple-A Sugar Land before quickly earning a promotion to the major league roster. His return to the big leagues came just days after signing. However, his time with Houston’s MLB club was also limited, as he appeared in eight games and recorded two hits in 14 at-bats before being designated for assignment.
2. MLB Track Record and Offensive Challenges
Across parts of five major league seasons, Johnson has played for multiple organizations, including the Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, San Francisco Giants, and Houston Astros. His time in the majors has largely been defined by short stints and limited playing opportunities. In total MLB action, he has accumulated fewer than 200 plate appearances, posting a .191 batting average with a .249 on-base percentage and a .306 slugging mark. He has also hit five home runs in 75 games while striking out at a 28% rate. Despite flashes of athleticism, consistency at the plate has remained a challenge, limiting his ability to secure an everyday role at the MLB level. Still, his defensive versatility and speed have helped him remain a recurring option for teams seeking depth in the outfield.
3. Stronger Production at Triple-A and Abroad
While his major league numbers have been modest, Johnson has shown more consistent production at Triple-A over the course of his career. In nearly 1,800 plate appearances across seven seasons, he has posted a .255/.321/.448 slash line. One of his stronger recent campaigns came in 2024 with Triple-A Norfolk in the Orioles organization, where he hit 21 home runs, drove in 76 runs, and stole 17 bases over 118 games. His offensive output has often been more impactful at the minor league level, where he has demonstrated a blend of power and speed that has kept him on MLB organizations’ radar. In 2025, Johnson also spent time in the Mexican League with Caliente de Durango, delivering a dominant short stint in which he hit .429 with a 1.455 OPS and five home runs in just 10 games before returning to affiliated baseball.
