The Houston Astros delivered a dominant performance on Monday night, combining for a no-hitter in a 9-0 victory over the Texas Rangers in the opening game of their series. The win marked one of the most complete efforts of the season for Houston, as both the pitching staff and offense controlled the game from start to finish.

Tatsuya Imai set the tone on the mound, working deep into the game before handing the ball over to the bullpen. Relievers Steven Okert and Alimber Santa finished the job, preserving the no-hit bid and sealing a rare milestone for the Astros pitching staff.

The victory extended Houston’s winning streak to four games and added another chapter to the franchise’s history of strong pitching performances. It also marked the first no-hitter in Major League Baseball since September 2024, when a combined effort by the Chicago Cubs accomplished the feat against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

For Texas, the loss was a frustrating start to the series, as the lineup was unable to generate consistent contact or break through against a steady mix of Astros arms.

1. Imai Sets The Foundation

Tatsuya Imai opened the game with an impressive outing, setting the tone early by keeping the Rangers off balance through his six innings of work. Despite issuing four walks, he avoided allowing any hits and consistently worked out of minor trouble. His pitch count climbed as the game progressed, and with 97 pitches thrown, Houston manager Joe Espada opted to turn to the bullpen rather than push him further into the contest. The decision preserved both his arm and the no-hit opportunity. Imai’s performance was especially notable given his uneven start to the season. After signing a high-profile contract from Japan, he had struggled in his first five MLB appearances, entering Monday with an 8.31 ERA and a stint on the injured list. Against a struggling Rangers lineup, however, he rediscovered his command enough to keep hitters off balance, giving Houston a strong foundation to complete the historic effort.

2. Bullpen Completes The No-Hitter

Once Imai exited, Steven Okert took over and maintained the no-hit bid despite issuing an additional walk. He managed to keep Texas from generating any meaningful contact, preserving the momentum built by the starter. Okert’s ability to settle into the game quickly proved crucial as the pressure of a no-hitter began to build. Each inning carried increasing tension, but he consistently executed pitches in key moments to keep the Rangers off the bases via hits. Alimber Santa then stepped in to close out the final two innings, delivering a composed MLB debut performance. He retired the side in order, ensuring there would be no late-game drama and locking in the combined no-hitter. The bullpen’s combined effort highlighted Houston’s depth and flexibility, as multiple pitchers contributed to one of the season’s most notable pitching achievements.

3. Offensive Support And Series Impact

While the pitching staff dominated, Houston’s offense ensured there was little margin for error by providing steady run support throughout the game. Christian Walker and Yordan Alvarez each contributed home runs, continuing strong individual seasons. Nick Allen also played a key role, driving in two runs during the seventh inning to further extend the Astros’ lead and put the game firmly out of reach. The offensive production allowed the pitching staff to operate with confidence and aggression. The Rangers, meanwhile, struggled to find any rhythm at the plate and were unable to mount sustained pressure against Houston’s pitchers. The lack of offensive response underscored the effectiveness of the Astros’ approach on both sides of the ball. For Texas, the no-hit loss marked the team’s first since 2021, when Corey Kluber achieved the feat against them as a member of the New York Yankees. The two teams are set to continue their series on Tuesday evening.
