The Athletics will be without one of their most consistent everyday players after designated hitter Brent Rooker was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday following an MRI that confirmed a right oblique strain. The injury occurred during Thursday’s 1-0 win over the New York Yankees, when Rooker fouled off a changeup in the first inning.

The setback brings an abrupt halt to Rooker’s streak of 214 consecutive games, the fourth-longest run in franchise history since 2000. His durability had been one of the defining traits of his recent seasons, making his absence especially significant for the club.

Rooker had been one of the most durable players in baseball, appearing in all 162 games in the 2025 season and becoming just the fifth Athletics player since 2000 to achieve that feat. His consistency had made him a central figure in the lineup.

The injury now forces the Athletics to adjust their offensive structure as they prepare to open a three-game series against the New York Mets.

Rooker’s oblique strain is expected to sideline him for an extended period, with typical recovery timelines ranging from four to six weeks depending on severity. The team has not yet provided a definitive return date. Manager Mark Kotsay acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his recovery but indicated that Rooker will likely miss multiple weeks of action. Oblique injuries are particularly difficult for hitters due to the rotational stress involved in swinging. A comparable case earlier in the season saw catcher Shea Langeliers return in just over three weeks, though recovery timelines vary significantly from player to player. For the Athletics, the loss comes at a time when Rooker had begun to find more rhythm offensively after a slow start to the season.

2. Offensive Production And Season Context

Last season, Rooker emerged as one of the team’s most productive hitters, batting .262 with 30 home runs and 89 RBIs. His performance earned him an All-Star selection and a spot in the Home Run Derby. In that contest, he launched 17 home runs before narrowly losing a tiebreaker by less than an inch, underscoring his reputation as a legitimate power threat. This season, however, his numbers have been more modest, with a .146 batting average, two home runs, and eight RBIs. Notably, seven of those RBIs came in a recent three-game stretch, suggesting signs of offensive improvement before the injury. His absence removes a key middle-order presence and forces the Athletics to rely more heavily on emerging contributors.

3. Roster Moves And Lineup Adjustments

To fill the roster vacancy, the Athletics recalled Zack Gelof from Triple-A Las Vegas. Gelof has impressed in limited action, posting a .366 average with a 1.251 OPS across 11 games. He has also contributed four home runs, three doubles, and 10 RBIs while expanding his defensive versatility to all three outfield positions. His hot start provides immediate offensive reinforcement. Additional at-bats are expected for players such as Carlos Cortes, while manager Mark Kotsay may also adjust playing time between Jeff McNeil and Lawrence Butler to compensate for Rooker’s absence. The reshuffled lineup will be tested immediately as the Athletics attempt to maintain offensive stability during Rooker’s recovery period.
