Auburn head coach Alex Golesh continues to make early progress on his first recruiting cycle in the SEC, adding another major piece to the program’s 2027 class. The Tigers secured a commitment from four-star running back Myson Johnson-Cook, a highly regarded national prospect.
Johnson-Cook announced his decision on Saturday, selecting Auburn after narrowing his choices to a final group that included several major programs. The commitment adds momentum to Golesh’s efforts to reshape Auburn’s long-term roster identity.
The 6-foot-2 running back is considered one of the top players at his position nationally and has drawn attention for his size, versatility, and production at the high school level. His decision arrives ahead of his senior season at East St. Louis High School in Illinois.
For Auburn, the addition marks another early step in what the coaching staff hopes will become a competitive and nationally relevant recruiting class.
1. Elite Prospect Chooses Auburn Over Major Programs
Johnson-Cook entered the recruiting cycle as one of the most sought-after running backs in the country. Recruiting outlets have consistently ranked him among the top players at his position, with strong national and state-level recognition. His final decision came down to Auburn, Miami, Ole Miss, LSU, and Kentucky, all of which made strong pushes for his commitment. Ultimately, he chose the Tigers after multiple visits and evaluations. According to reporting from recruiting analyst Hayes Fawcett, Johnson-Cook cited Auburn’s culture and long-term vision as key factors in his commitment. He expressed confidence in the coaching staff’s ability to develop him at the next level. He also highlighted the program’s running back tradition and the opportunity to be part of a rebuilding effort under new leadership in the SEC.
2. Player Profile And Development Potential
Johnson-Cook is widely regarded as one of the most complete running back prospects in the 2027 class. He ranks as the second-best running back nationally according to ESPN and is also highly ranked by other major recruiting services. His combination of size, strength, and athletic ability makes him a difficult matchup for high school defenses. At 6-foot-2, he brings a physical presence that projects well to the collegiate level. Recruiting analysts also point to his ability to contribute in multiple phases of the offense, including between-the-tackles runs, outside carries, and short-yardage situations. He is also considered one of the top three players in the state of Illinois, further emphasizing his status as a premier regional and national recruit.
3. Early Foundation For Auburn’s 2027 Class
Johnson-Cook becomes the third known commitment in Auburn’s 2027 recruiting class under Golesh. He joins defensive lineman Donivan Moore and tight end George Lamons Jr. as early building blocks for the program. While the class is still in its infancy, Auburn’s coaching staff is focusing on establishing early momentum and building relationships across key positions. The addition of a high-level running back helps anchor the offensive side of the group. Currently, Auburn’s 2027 class ranks outside the top tier nationally, but evaluations and rankings are expected to shift as more prospects commit over time. The staff is still in the early stages of assembling its full recruiting board. Golesh and his staff are expected to remain active on the recruiting trail as they look to close the gap with established SEC programs in future cycles.
