The Trail Blazers walked into San Antonio knowing they would need a steady hand in crunch time to leave with a victory. What they got instead was a star turn from Deni Avdija, who delivered the defining shots of the night and authored the most complete performance of his Portland tenure.

Now in his sixth NBA season and second with the Blazers, Avdija has emerged as the engine of a young roster searching for consistency. He has led Portland in scoring and playmaking this year, pushing the team into the fringes of the Western Conference playoff race.

Saturday night felt like a moment built for him. Against one of the league’s stronger clubs and on the road, the Blazers needed a closer. Avdija answered with a fearless pull-up three in the final minute, rising over a defender to give Portland a four-point cushion it would not relinquish.

By the final buzzer, Portland had stunned San Antonio 115–110, and Avdija stood at the center of it all — a triple-double in hand and another reminder that his rise is reshaping the Blazers’ outlook.

1. Closing Time Brilliance

The game tightened in the closing minutes, with the Spurs threatening to erase Portland’s early control. Each San Antonio run was met with calm execution from Avdija, who orchestrated the offense rather than forcing the issue. His biggest moment came inside the final 60 seconds, when he pulled up beyond the arc against tight coverage and buried a three to make it 114–110. The shot silenced the crowd and tilted the momentum permanently toward the visitors. Avdija’s stat line reflected his all-around imprint: 29 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, and a block. Though he needed 23 attempts to reach his total, he mixed timely scoring with unselfish distribution and made eight of his 11 free throws to close the door. It was not merely a hot shooting night but a display of leadership, with Avdija directing traffic, absorbing defensive attention, and trusting his teammates when the Spurs collapsed on him.

2. Fast Start, Firm Finish

Portland seized control early, sprinting to a 35–24 lead after the first quarter. The Blazers’ pace caught San Antonio flat-footed, and the early cushion allowed them to dictate the game’s rhythm. The Spurs gradually chipped away, tightening their defense and finding cleaner looks in transition. By the fourth quarter, the margin had shrunk to a single-possession affair, and the atmosphere inside the arena had shifted. Rather than unravel, Portland leaned on execution. They slowed the game, protected the ball, and forced San Antonio to defend deep into the shot clock, a strategy that paid dividends down the stretch. The final minutes became a test of resolve, and Portland passed. Their late-game poise, capped by Avdija’s three, turned what could have been a collapse into one of their most composed wins of the season.

3. Balanced Support Fuels Win

Avdija was not alone. Rookie center Donovan Clingan powered the interior with 24 points and 12 rebounds, providing the physical presence that kept San Antonio from dominating the paint. Toumani Camara added 20 points and eight boards, thriving as a secondary scorer who punished defensive rotations. His activity on both ends helped stabilize Portland whenever the Spurs mounted a surge. Caleb Love supplied 16 points and five rebounds, spacing the floor and capitalizing on kick-outs generated by Avdija’s drives. Together, the quartet gave Portland a balanced offensive attack that proved difficult to contain. With the victory, the Blazers improved to 16–20 and climbed into ninth in the Western Conference standings, level with Memphis and within striking distance of both Golden State and Phoenix as the season’s midpoint approaches.
