Boston Celtics wing Baylor Scheierman has followed an unconventional path to the NBA. Hailing from a small Nebraska city — a state that has produced only 21 NBA players — and spending most of his collegiate career at South Dakota State, which has sent just three players to the league, Scheierman’s journey has been far from typical.

The 25-year-old’s distinctive look, including a shaggy haircut and tattoos, has also made him a target for bench heckling around the league. Despite the attention, Scheierman has learned to use it as fuel rather than distraction, often responding to opponents with confidence.

Friday night offered a perfect example during Boston’s 112-93 win over the Sacramento Kings. When Kings players tried to rattle him on a wide-open three-point attempt, Scheierman calmly sank the shot and stared back at the bench, embodying the poise that has become his hallmark.

His rise on the Celtics roster has been gradual but steady, marked by his ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game. Offensive efficiency, defensive versatility, and the willingness to embrace any role have helped him become a reliable piece for head coach Joe Mazzulla’s rotation.

1. Responding to Challenges

Scheierman’s ability to shrug off heckling is as much a mental skill as a physical one. “I’m a 6'7” white guy with shaggy hair and some tattoos,” he said postgame. “So they like to attack me when I’m out there. I’ll give it right back to them.” The Celtics wing has consistently shown he can rise above distractions, converting those moments into confidence on the court. His composure allows him to remain effective even when opposing players attempt to disrupt his rhythm. Scheierman’s mentality exemplifies the underdog ethos that has characterized his career. Few expected him to make a mark in the NBA after being drafted in the first round in 2024, yet he has embraced the challenge with maturity and focus. Such mental toughness has translated into tangible production, helping Boston maintain composure during games where key starters rest or face foul trouble. His presence provides an added layer of resilience to the Celtics’ rotation.

2. Offensive Growth and Efficiency

Friday’s performance also highlighted Scheierman’s offensive contributions. He finished with 16 points — just shy of a season high — along with five rebounds in nearly 31 minutes of play. While his three-point shooting garners much attention, Celtics coaches note his broader offensive impact. Head coach Joe Mazzulla praised Scheierman for his all-around play, particularly on defense. “He’s developed into a utility guy for us defensively, where he can defend different matchups,” Mazzulla said. “He draws some legal screens for us, but he can make defensive plays… he’s been making some shots and offensive rebounds.” Scheierman’s career-high 45.9% shooting from the floor and 41.5% from deep this season reflects his improving offensive efficiency. Increased minutes have allowed him to find a rhythm and sustain contributions over longer stretches of the game. His development underscores the Celtics’ growing trust in his abilities. Whether spotting up for a corner three or defending multiple positions, Scheierman is proving that he can impact the game in diverse ways.

3. Rising Role in the Rotation

Scheierman has increasingly become a dependable option for Boston, particularly when stars like Jaylen Brown rest. Against the Kings, he earned a starting nod and helped the team secure its 3-1 record with him in the lineup. The sophomore wing emphasizes maximizing opportunities and building trust with his coaches. “I think I’ve tried to make the most of every opportunity that I’ve gotten, and with that comes more trust,” he said. “I’m just out there trying to impact the game in whatever way necessary.” Looking ahead, Scheierman’s role could expand further, especially in games where Boston rotates its key players. Sunday’s matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks may provide another chance for him to start, adding depth and versatility to the Celtics lineup. Regardless of starting status, Scheierman brings confidence and swagger to each appearance, embodying the mindset of a player who knows his value and is eager to prove it against any opponent.
