The Toronto Blue Jays will be without veteran left-handed reliever Joe Mantiply after manager John Schneider confirmed that the pitcher will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. The announcement came Thursday ahead of the team’s series opener against the Baltimore Orioles.
Mantiply, 35, was initially placed on the 15-day injured list on May 19 after being diagnosed with left knee inflammation. However, further medical evaluation and a second opinion revealed more significant issues that will require a surgical procedure.
While the team has not yet set a date for the operation, Schneider indicated that the expectation is for a return this season, suggesting the procedure is not viewed as a long-term or career-threatening setback.
The development marks a pause in what had been a steady and productive stretch for Mantiply since joining the Blue Jays organization earlier this year.
1. Injury Update and Medical Decision
Mantiply’s knee issue initially appeared manageable when he was first sidelined with inflammation. The Blue Jays medical staff opted for a cautious approach, placing him on the injured list while further evaluations were conducted. After additional testing and consultation, doctors determined that arthroscopic surgery would be necessary to address underlying structural concerns in the knee. The decision reflects a more definitive step aimed at preventing lingering complications later in the season. Although the procedure is relatively common among pitchers dealing with joint irritation, it still requires a recovery period that has yet to be clearly defined. The team has not provided a specific timeline for his return to baseball activities. For now, the Blue Jays are focused on ensuring Mantiply undergoes the procedure at the appropriate time while avoiding further stress on the affected knee.
2. Performance Before the Injury
Mantiply’s injury comes during a season in which he had established himself as a reliable bullpen option for Toronto. Signed to a minor-league deal on March 3 after starting the year with Triple-A Buffalo, he quickly worked his way onto the major league roster. The Blue Jays selected his contract on April 5, just weeks into the season, rewarding a strong start in the organization’s minor league system. From there, he became a steady contributor out of the bullpen. Across 17 Major League appearances, Mantiply posted a 2.04 ERA over 17 2/3 innings pitched. He also recorded a 1.13 WHIP and held a 1-0 record during that span. Opposing hitters managed a .254 batting average against him, while he struck out 16 batters and issued just four walks, reflecting solid control and effectiveness in relief situations.
3. Midseason Form and Role in Bullpen
After a difficult outing early in the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he allowed three earned runs, Mantiply quickly stabilized his performance. Over his next several appearances, he showed improved command and consistency. In a 5 2/3-inning stretch following that outing, he allowed only one earned run, signaling a return to form. That adjustment helped solidify his role in the middle innings of Toronto’s bullpen. His performance peaked during May, when he delivered six consecutive scoreless appearances. During that stretch, he limited opposing hitters to a .200 batting average, reinforcing his value as a dependable left-handed option. With Mantiply now sidelined, the Blue Jays will need to adjust their bullpen structure as they navigate the middle portion of the season, hoping to regain one of their more consistent relief arms later in the year.
