Braxton Ashcraft continued his breakout season in impressive fashion Wednesday night, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a convincing 11-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners with one of the best performances of his young major league career. The right-hander dominated from the opening inning, overpowering Seattle’s lineup while helping Pittsburgh return to the .500 mark.

Ashcraft worked six strong innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits while striking out 10 batters without issuing a single walk. His command and ability to consistently miss bats gave the Mariners few opportunities to generate offense throughout the evening.

The performance was significant beyond the final score. By recording another game with at least 10 strikeouts and no walks, Ashcraft joined a select group of pitchers in Pirates history, adding his name alongside several of the franchise’s most accomplished arms.

As Pittsburgh continues to push toward postseason contention, Ashcraft’s emergence has become one of the organization’s most encouraging developments. His consistency throughout the season has helped strengthen the Pirates’ rotation while establishing him as one of the club’s most dependable starters.

1. Ashcraft Dominates Mariners Lineup

Ashcraft controlled the game from the first pitch, displaying excellent command of his fastball and secondary pitches throughout his six-inning outing. Seattle managed only five hits against him, with few hitters consistently making solid contact. His ability to attack the strike zone proved especially important. By avoiding walks while recording 10 strikeouts, Ashcraft consistently stayed ahead in counts and prevented the Mariners from creating scoring opportunities through free baserunners. The only run he surrendered came as an earned run, but it did little to change the direction of the contest. Pittsburgh’s offense quickly provided ample run support, allowing Ashcraft to remain aggressive and continue attacking hitters throughout his start. The Pirates rewarded their starter with an explosive offensive performance, cruising to an 11-1 victory that highlighted the club’s balanced effort on both sides of the ball. The comfortable margin also allowed the bullpen to finish the game without unnecessary pressure.

2. Historic Achievement Places Him Among Franchise Greats

Ashcraft’s latest outing carried historical significance for the Pirates organization. According to MLB.com researcher Sarah Langs, the performance marked his second game this season with at least 10 strikeouts and no walks. That accomplishment made Ashcraft the first Pirates pitcher since at least 1900 to record multiple games with 10 or more strikeouts and zero walks in the same season. The achievement reflects both his swing-and-miss ability and his exceptional command on the mound. The milestone also places him alongside some of the most recognizable pitchers in franchise history. Only Paul Skenes, Gerrit Cole, and Bob Veale had previously recorded two such performances during their Pirates careers, underscoring the rarity of Ashcraft’s accomplishment. Joining that distinguished group is another indication of how rapidly the 26-year-old has developed. While his major league career remains in its early stages, performances like Wednesday’s continue to strengthen his reputation as one of Pittsburgh’s emerging stars.

3. Strong Second Season Fuels Pirates’ Momentum

Wednesday’s outing was not Ashcraft’s first dominant performance of the season. On May 31 against the Minnesota Twins, he also completed six innings without issuing a walk while striking out 11 batters and allowing only two earned runs in a 9-3 Pirates victory. Those two starts have become defining moments in what has been an impressive second major league season. Entering the matchup against Seattle, Ashcraft owned a 3.18 earned run average and a 136 ERA+ across 15 starts, numbers that reflected his growing consistency. His development has provided an important boost for Pittsburgh’s pitching staff. As the season has progressed, Ashcraft has become increasingly reliable, giving the Pirates quality innings while consistently keeping opposing offenses under control. The victory over Seattle also carried significance for the team as a whole. By improving to 40-40, the Pirates climbed back to the .500 mark, and Ashcraft’s continued emergence gives the club another reason to believe it can remain competitive during the second half of the season.
