Brendan Sorsby’s path back to professional football has become significantly more complicated after the Canadian Football League announced that it will not permit teams to sign the former Cincinnati quarterback. The decision comes after the NFL chose not to conduct a supplemental draft, leaving Sorsby without a league to play in during the 2026 season.

The CFL confirmed that no team will be allowed to place Sorsby on its negotiation list or register him under contract. League officials cited concerns surrounding allegations tied to the quarterback’s gambling history, emphasizing that maintaining competitive integrity remains one of the organization’s highest priorities.

The ruling effectively closes another potential avenue for Sorsby as he attempts to revive his football career. With opportunities in both the NCAA and professional ranks becoming increasingly limited, the talented quarterback now faces an extended period away from competitive play.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Sorsby’s collegiate résumé suggests he possesses the talent to attract attention if he eventually becomes eligible to return. For now, however, his football ambitions have been placed on hold while he waits for another opportunity to emerge.

1. CFL Takes Firm Position on Eligibility

The Canadian Football League released a statement explaining its decision to bar Sorsby from signing with any of its franchises. According to league officials, protecting the integrity of the competition was the primary factor behind the ruling. In its statement, the CFL described the allegations involving Sorsby as serious and said they prevented the league from approving any contract involving the quarterback at this time. As a result, all nine teams are prohibited from adding him to their negotiation lists. The announcement represents one of the strongest disciplinary positions the league can take against a player who has not yet entered its ranks. By refusing to register a contract altogether, the CFL has removed any possibility of Sorsby using the league as a platform to continue his development this season. For the quarterback, the decision eliminates what appeared to be one of the few remaining opportunities to continue playing competitive football in 2026. Instead of preparing for training camp, he now faces an uncertain wait before another chance becomes available.

2. Strong College Career Overshadowed by Off-Field Issues

Before his eligibility questions emerged, Sorsby had built a reputation as one of the more productive quarterbacks in college football. During his final season at Cincinnati, he displayed an ability to impact games both through the air and on the ground. Over 12 games, Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards while recording 27 touchdown passes against only five interceptions. His efficiency as a passer was complemented by his mobility, as he added 580 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. Those performances earned him Second-Team All-Big 12 recognition and placed him on the radar of NFL evaluators searching for developmental quarterback prospects. His dual-threat skill set and athleticism made him an intriguing option for teams looking to strengthen their depth at the position. However, his accomplishments on the field have since been overshadowed by the issues that have affected his eligibility. What once appeared to be a promising transition toward professional football has instead become a prolonged period of uncertainty.

3. 2027 NFL Draft Appears to Be the Next Opportunity

With the CFL no longer an option and the NFL opting against a supplemental draft, Sorsby’s most realistic path back to professional football now appears to be the 2027 NFL Draft. That timeline, however, presents its own set of challenges. A full season away from organized football could make it more difficult for scouts and front offices to evaluate his readiness for the professional level. Extended absences often raise questions about conditioning, development and overall preparedness, particularly for quarterbacks. Even so, Sorsby’s collegiate production provides evidence of the talent that once generated professional interest. If he remains committed to training and staying prepared, he could still have an opportunity to rebuild his standing before next year’s draft process begins. Until then, the quarterback’s future remains uncertain. While his football journey has encountered significant obstacles, the coming months will determine whether he can position himself for another chance to pursue a professional career.
