Few fans realize that Jalen Brunson and Andre Iguodala share a connection that dates back nearly two decades. Long before Brunson became a standout guard for the New York Knicks, he was just a kid around NBA locker rooms, unknowingly crossing paths with a future champion.
Today, Brunson is in the midst of one of the best stretches of his career, leading the Knicks with poise and consistency. Iguodala, meanwhile, has transitioned into retirement after a decorated 19-year run that included championships and a Finals MVP.
Their story, however, began in an unlikely setting — a Philadelphia 76ers practice gym in the mid-2000s. At the time, Brunson’s father, Rick Brunson, was briefly part of the organization, creating an early bridge between the two players.
What followed was a small but memorable moment that Brunson would carry with him for years, eventually resurfacing as a humorous anecdote that highlights the unique intersections within the NBA.
1. A Childhood Moment in Philadelphia
The connection between Brunson and Iguodala traces back to 2006, when Iguodala was emerging as a young talent in Philadelphia. That same year, Rick Brunson joined the 76ers’ preseason roster, bringing his young son into close proximity with the team. During one of the team’s shootarounds, a young Brunson found himself helping out by rebounding for players — a common role for kids around NBA environments. It was in that setting that he had his brief but unforgettable interaction with Iguodala. Brunson later recalled the moment on the “Roommates Show,” describing how he tried to follow what he believed was proper basketball etiquette. After a made shot, he instinctively attempted to return the ball to the shooter. However, a split-second misjudgment led to an awkward outcome. Brunson accidentally threw the ball toward Iguodala at the wrong moment, striking him in the head — a mistake that immediately drew a strong reaction.
2. From Fear to Humor
At the time, the young Brunson was understandably rattled. Iguodala, focused and intense during the workout, reacted with visible frustration, leaving a lasting impression on the child who had just made the mistake. Brunson admitted that he was “scared” in that moment, unsure of how the situation would unfold. For a young fan and aspiring player, the experience of upsetting an NBA professional — even unintentionally — was overwhelming. Years later, however, the story has taken on a lighter tone. When Brunson shared the anecdote publicly, Iguodala responded with amusement, admitting he had no recollection of the incident. The contrast between Brunson’s vivid memory and Iguodala’s lack of it underscores the passage of time and the different perspectives each player brought to the moment. What once felt significant to a young Brunson became a humorous footnote in Iguodala’s long career.
3. A Full-Circle NBA Journey
While that early encounter was brief, it foreshadowed a future connection between the two players. Iguodala went on to establish himself as one of the league’s most versatile veterans, enjoying a breakout season in Philadelphia and later achieving championship success. Rick Brunson, meanwhile, did not make the final roster that year, but his influence on his son’s basketball journey remained strong. Jalen Brunson would go on to develop into a high-level guard, carving out his own path in the league. The story came full circle more than a decade later. In 2018, Iguodala, then a member of the Golden State Warriors, faced Brunson for the first time when the younger guard entered the league as a rookie with the Dallas Mavericks. By that point, Brunson was no longer the nervous child from the practice gym. Instead, he had become a professional in his own right, competing against the same player he once feared in a completely different context.
