The Providence Friars are undergoing a significant roster overhaul under new head coach Bryan Hodgson, who has quickly reshaped the program through the transfer portal. In just over a month on the job, Hodgson has already assembled a large and experienced incoming group aimed at restoring competitiveness in the Big East.

The latest and most notable addition came with the commitment of former Georgetown guard Malik Mack, a highly productive backcourt player who immediately raises the team’s offensive ceiling. His decision was first reported Tuesday, marking one of the biggest recruiting wins of the offseason for Providence.

Mack’s move also carries added context given the coaching connections between programs, as Georgetown head coach Ed Cooley previously led Providence before making the switch. Cooley had initially recruited Mack to Georgetown, adding another layer of narrative to his transfer decision.

With Mack now in the fold, Providence is beginning to emerge as one of the more intriguing reshaped rosters in the conference.

1. Mack’s Production and NBA Potential

Mack arrives at Providence after a strong season with Georgetown, where he played a major role as a lead guard. He appeared in 34 games while averaging just over 32 minutes per contest, serving as a primary offensive engine. He posted 13.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game, showing the ability to contribute both as a scorer and facilitator. His production came in a high-usage role, giving him extensive experience against Big East competition. Shooting efficiency was mixed, as he connected on 38.1% from the field and 29.8% from three-point range. However, he remained reliable at the free-throw line, converting 81.8% of his attempts. His combination of usage, playmaking, and scoring ability has placed him on the radar of professional scouts as a potential NBA Draft consideration.

2. Massive Transfer Portal Overhaul

Mack is one of several key additions in what has become a sweeping roster rebuild for Providence. Hodgson has prioritized depth, versatility, and experience through the portal to reshape the team quickly. The incoming group includes Miles Byrd, Arrinten Page, Ryan Sabol, Samson Aletan, Devin Vanterpool, and Gavin Hightower, forming a large and diverse transfer class. Each player brings different strengths across multiple positions. This influx of talent gives Providence one of the more complete-looking rosters on paper within the Big East, at least in terms of potential balance and depth. The challenge now shifts to integration and chemistry. Hodgson’s task will be to turn individual production into cohesive team identity before the start of conference play.

3. Pressure to Return to NCAA Tournament

Providence enters this new era following three consecutive seasons without an NCAA Tournament appearance. The program is under pressure to reestablish itself as a consistent postseason contender. Ironically, the last time the Friars reached the tournament came under former head coach Ed Cooley, adding historical symmetry to the current rebuild. The program now hopes Hodgson can restore that level of success. The influx of transfers, led by Mack, gives Providence an immediate talent boost, but also introduces the challenge of blending multiple new pieces into a functioning rotation. Still, the expectation is that this roster has enough talent to compete for a return to March Madness if development and chemistry align.
