The Milwaukee Bucks entered Sunday surrounded by speculation about a potential coaching shakeup, and those rumors quickly turned into reality. Following a lopsided 126-106 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, the organization officially parted ways with head coach Doc Rivers, signaling another major reset for a franchise that had hoped to remain a contender.

Confirmation of Rivers’ departure came later that evening, bringing clarity to a situation that had been building over the course of the season. The Bucks now face yet another coaching search, their third in as many years, after finishing with a disappointing 32-50 record. For a team with championship aspirations, the result marked a significant step backward.

Rivers’ tenure in Milwaukee ends with a 97-103 overall record, reflecting a period defined by uneven performance and internal challenges. Reports throughout the season pointed to a growing disconnect between the veteran coach and key players, including franchise cornerstone Giannis Antetokounmpo.

While Rivers attempted to address those concerns publicly late in the season, the issues appeared to persist. Ultimately, the combination of on-court struggles and locker room tension contributed to the organization’s decision to move in a different direction.

1. A Rocky Coaching Tenure

Rivers’ time with the Bucks began under unusual circumstances, adding pressure from the outset. He was brought in midseason after the team dismissed Adrian Griffin despite a strong 30-13 start in January 2024. The sudden change raised expectations that Rivers could stabilize and elevate the roster. However, the transition did not produce the desired results. Milwaukee went 17-19 for the remainder of that season under Rivers, struggling to find consistency on both ends of the floor. What was expected to be a seamless adjustment instead exposed deeper structural issues. The following season offered a full opportunity for Rivers to implement his system, but results remained mixed. The Bucks finished 48-34 in the 2024-25 campaign, a respectable mark but below the standard expected from a team built around elite talent. As losses mounted and performances fluctuated, scrutiny intensified. Questions about Rivers’ fit with the roster and his ability to maximize the team’s potential became increasingly difficult for the organization to ignore.

2. Injuries And Chemistry Concerns

Complicating matters throughout Rivers’ tenure was a series of injuries to key players. Antetokounmpo missed multiple stretches, limiting the team’s ability to maintain continuity and rhythm. His absence was especially felt during critical points of the season. Former star guard Damian Lillard also dealt with injuries before eventually departing and returning to the Portland Trail Blazers. His inconsistent availability further disrupted the team’s chemistry and offensive identity. The combination of injuries and roster changes made it difficult for Milwaukee to establish a stable rotation. Even when players returned, the team often struggled to regain cohesion, leading to uneven performances against both strong and weaker opponents. Beyond physical setbacks, reports of tension between Rivers and players added another layer of complexity. While such dynamics are not uncommon during difficult seasons, the perceived disconnect appeared to linger, impacting both morale and execution on the court.
