Budda Baker’s impact on the field has long been defined by speed and physicality, but this week the veteran safety was recognized for something less measurable and equally meaningful. At the NFL Honors ceremony in San Francisco, Baker was named the 2025 recipient of the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, an honor voted on by players across the league.

The annual award is presented to the player who best represents sportsmanship, fair play, and respect for opponents. It is considered one of the league’s most peer-driven distinctions, highlighting character and conduct as much as performance. For Baker, it marked a moment that reflected years of consistency and professionalism.

Now in his ninth season, the 30-year-old has become one of the Cardinals’ most trusted figures, known as much for his leadership as his relentless style of play. Teammates and opponents alike have praised his approach, describing him as fierce between the lines but respectful after the whistle.

Baker joins a select group of Cardinals connected to the award’s history. Larry Fitzgerald captured the inaugural honor in 2014, and former Arizona defensive lineman Calais Campbell won in 2022 while playing for Baltimore. Baker’s recognition places him firmly within that lineage of respected leaders.

1. A Peer-Recognized Honor

The Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award carries unique weight because it is determined by player votes rather than media or coaches. Each team nominates one representative, and the league’s athletes ultimately select the winner, making the distinction a reflection of league-wide respect. Baker had been close before. He served as Arizona’s nominee for six seasons and was a finalist for the award three straight years before finally earning the top honor. The persistence underscored how consistently he has been viewed as an example of professionalism. Speaking after the ceremony, Baker emphasized that his style has never been about chasing accolades. Instead, he said, he has simply tried to play the game the way he learned it growing up — fast, physical, and fair. “I’ve always played football the same way,” Baker said. “I want to play at a high level, help my team win, and do things the right way. I want to be a great player and also a great person on and off the field.”

2. Relentless Production, Clean Play

While the award centers on character, Baker’s performance remains impossible to ignore. Even as the Cardinals endured an uneven season and faded from playoff contention late, he rarely left the field, logging 98% of the defense’s snaps across 16 games. His stat line once again reflected his all-around presence. Baker totaled 120 tackles, including 57 solo stops, marking the sixth time in his career he surpassed the 100-tackle mark. The durability and consistency helped secure his eighth Pro Bowl selection. Over a five-year stretch, Baker has paired that activity with remarkable discipline. In nearly 5,000 defensive snaps during that span, he committed just four penalties. Across his career, he has produced 580 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 26 tackles for loss, six interceptions, and 24 pass breakups while maintaining one of the cleanest reputations among starting safeties. That combination — high volume, high intensity, and low mistakes — has defined his style and made him one of the league’s most reliable defenders.

3. Respect Beyond the Stat Sheet

Baker’s reputation extends beyond his own locker room. Division rivals have repeatedly pointed to the way he competes without crossing lines, a balance that isn’t always easy for a player known for bone-jarring hits. Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua and San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle have both publicly commended Baker’s competitiveness and professionalism. Even in heated NFC West matchups, he has earned respect for the way he conducts himself. Inside the Cardinals organization, that demeanor has translated into leadership responsibilities. Baker has been voted a team captain for six consecutive seasons, serving as a steady voice for a roster that has undergone frequent changes. Coaches credit him for setting the tone at practice and during games, modeling preparation and accountability for younger players. For a franchise navigating transitions, that presence has proven invaluable.
