With training camp just around the corner, Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker has publicly voiced his frustration over an unresolved contract situation involving one of his teammates. Although Baker did not mention the player by name, his comments quickly fueled speculation that he was referring to quarterback Jacoby Brissett, whose contract has become a topic of discussion during the offseason.

The veteran defensive leader took to social media with an emotional message, urging the organization to complete a new agreement before training camp begins. Baker suggested the player was not making unreasonable demands and encouraged both sides to reach a deal without further delay.

While neither the Cardinals nor Brissett has publicly addressed ongoing negotiations, Baker’s remarks highlighted the uncertainty that can surround contract discussions as teams prepare for a new season. His comments also underscored the importance veteran players place on maintaining stability before the start of training camp.

Arizona enters the 2026 campaign hoping to improve after another difficult season, making any unresolved contract matter a potential distraction. With camp set to open soon, the organization will be eager to keep its focus on football rather than off-field negotiations.

1. Baker Speaks Out

Baker did not hide his feelings when posting on social media, expressing support for the unnamed teammate involved in the contract discussions. He argued that the player was seeking far less than many people might assume and urged the Cardinals to finalize an agreement as quickly as possible.

Although Baker avoided identifying the player directly, many observers connected his message to Brissett’s current contract situation. The timing of the post and ongoing speculation surrounding the quarterback made him the focus of much of the conversation that followed.

The outspoken support reflects Baker’s role as one of the Cardinals’ most respected veterans. Throughout his career, the multiple-time All-Pro has established himself as both a defensive leader and an influential voice inside the locker room.

His comments also carry additional significance because Baker has experienced contract uncertainty himself. In 2023, the standout safety requested a trade while seeking a new contract, giving him firsthand knowledge of the challenges players can face during negotiations.

2. Brissett’s Contract Draws Attention

Brissett is currently entering the final stages of the backup contract he signed with Arizona in 2025. Under that agreement, he is scheduled to receive $1.5 million in guaranteed money for the 2026 season, a figure that has become part of the current discussion.

The veteran quarterback strengthened his case for a larger salary by producing respectable numbers last season. He completed 64.9 percent of his passes while throwing for 3,366 yards and 23 touchdowns, providing stability for an offense that dealt with numerous challenges.

However, individual production did not translate into team success. Arizona finished just 1-11 in games started by Brissett, as injuries, defensive struggles, and inconsistency across the roster contributed to another disappointing campaign.

Those circumstances have complicated negotiations. Brissett can point to his solid statistical performance as justification for improved compensation, while the Cardinals must also evaluate whether he represents the long-term answer at quarterback or simply a short-term solution.

3. Camp Approaches Without Resolution

The Cardinals have other quarterback options if negotiations fail to produce an agreement. Veteran Gardner Minshew joined the team during free agency and could serve as a bridge starter while the organization continues developing rookie quarterback Carson Beck or evaluates future plans at the position.

Still, an unresolved contract could become an unwanted storyline once players report for training camp. If no deal is reached before practices begin, the possibility of a holdout could create unnecessary distractions for first-year head coach Mike LaFleur and his coaching staff.

The situation also raises broader questions about Arizona’s rebuilding process. As the franchise works toward becoming more competitive, balancing financial flexibility with retaining experienced veterans will remain one of the front office’s biggest challenges.

With training camp scheduled to begin on July 22, time is becoming an increasingly important factor. Whether the Cardinals and Brissett can reach common ground before then may determine whether the team starts camp focused entirely on preparing for the season or managing an unresolved contract dispute.
