The South Florida Bulls continued their improbable run toward the College Football Playoff conversation with a commanding 55-23 victory over UTSA in Week 11. Head coach Alex Golesh has orchestrated one of the most remarkable turnarounds in college football, with his team now 7-2 and surging behind the extraordinary play of junior quarterback Byrum Brown.

Brown once again proved unstoppable, combining poise, precision, and explosive athleticism in a performance that bordered on historic. The 21-year-old quarterback threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 109 yards and another score, and achieved statistical feats unmatched in decades of college or professional football.

According to On3 Sports’ Brett McMurphy, Brown became the first quarterback at any level — college or NFL — in over 30 years to post 200+ passing yards, 80+ rushing yards, and a touchdown in five straight games. Just as remarkably, he completed 14 of 15 passes, good for a 93 percent completion rate, making him the first player in more than three decades to hit those marks with that level of accuracy.

USF’s offense was so efficient that Brown only played two and a half quarters. The Bulls raced to a 55-13 lead by the start of the fourth, allowing Golesh to rest his starter and give backup Gaston Moore, a Tennessee transfer, some late-game snaps. Moore finished 2-for-3 passing for -6 yards as USF coasted to victory.

1. A Career Season for a Revitalized Star

Byrum Brown’s 2025 campaign represents the peak of his young career — and a powerful redemption story. After bursting onto the national scene as a sophomore in 2023, Brown missed most of the 2024 season due to injury, leaving his future uncertain. Now, he’s not only returned to form but surpassed it. Through nine games, Brown has tallied 2,203 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, six interceptions, 705 rushing yards, and nine rushing scores. Those numbers position him among the nation’s most productive dual-threat quarterbacks, putting him on track for career highs across the board. His ability to read defenses, extend plays, and make decisive runs has given USF’s offense a multidimensional edge rarely seen in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). Under Golesh’s tempo-driven system, Brown has excelled at both orchestrating quick strikes and sustaining long, balanced drives. What stands out most, however, is his efficiency. Whether attacking through the air or on the ground, Brown has displayed maturity and decision-making beyond his years. His chemistry with the receiving corps — led by speedster Sean Atkins and tight end Michael Brown-Stephens — has transformed the Bulls into one of the AAC’s most complete offensive units.

2. National Spotlight and NFL Curiosity

While Brown’s name has long been known to AAC followers, his recent run has captured national attention. Analysts across college football have begun to wonder whether the USF signal-caller could translate his skills to the professional level. At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Brown has the athletic profile of an NFL player, but scouts remain divided on his future position. While his passing mechanics have improved, his elite rushing ability — featuring a rare blend of burst and balance — has some suggesting he could make an NFL roster as a running back or hybrid offensive weapon. For now, Golesh and his coaching staff are focused squarely on the present. Brown’s leadership has set the tone for a program that has embraced underdog status and exceeded expectations. His calm command in the huddle and unselfish play style have made him a locker-room favorite and a stabilizing force in close games. Brown’s contributions extend beyond the stat sheet. His resilience after injury, commitment to improvement, and consistent production have elevated USF into one of college football’s most exciting stories — a team that believes it belongs among the nation’s elite.

3. Next Challenge: Road Test at Navy

With their playoff hopes still alive, the Bulls face another major test in Week 12, traveling to Annapolis to take on Navy, which remains undefeated in conference play. The Midshipmen’s disciplined option attack and stout defense will present a new challenge for Golesh’s squad. For USF, maintaining focus will be key. The team has thrived on energy and execution, but late-season road games often expose weaknesses. Golesh has emphasized the importance of minimizing turnovers and penalties — two areas that could determine whether the Bulls can keep their postseason aspirations intact. Navy’s defensive scheme will likely focus on containing Brown’s rushing ability and forcing him to win from the pocket. Yet, if the past five weeks are any indication, that may be easier said than done. Brown’s composure under pressure and ability to improvise have repeatedly bailed out the Bulls when drives stall. As USF inches closer to an AAC title shot — and possibly a major bowl appearance — the team’s hopes rest on Brown’s continued brilliance. His Week 11 performance wasn’t just another highlight; it was another statement that South Florida belongs in the national conversation.
