The spotlight will remain firmly on Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams as he enters his second NFL season with expectations higher than ever. After an encouraging but closely scrutinized rookie campaign, the former first overall pick is focused on taking the next step as both a passer and a leader.

Williams showed flashes of elite talent during the 2025 season, finishing with 3,942 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and seven interceptions while also contributing as a runner. Although those numbers demonstrated his playmaking ability, his completion percentage became one of the most discussed aspects of his performance throughout the year.

Critics questioned whether Williams needed to become a more accurate passer, while supporters argued that the statistics failed to capture the full picture of his decision-making. Rather than dwelling on the criticism, the young quarterback has embraced the challenge of proving he can continue developing into one of the league’s premier signal-callers.

As training camp approaches, Williams has spoken openly about his desire to improve and eliminate the doubts surrounding his game. With a new season on the horizon and an offense expected to take another step forward, he believes his performance will provide the strongest response to those questioning his long-term potential.

1. A Different Approach to Development

According to NFL insider Albert Breer, the Bears are approaching Williams’ second offseason differently from his first. Instead of overwhelming the quarterback with information, the coaching staff is emphasizing efficiency and confidence within the offensive system.

Quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett explained that one of the primary goals this offseason is to simplify certain aspects of Williams’ preparation. After introducing an extensive amount of information during his rookie year, the Bears now want their young quarterback to trust his instincts and allow the game to come more naturally.

That philosophy represents a significant shift in the coaching approach. During Williams’ first offseason, Barrett, head coach Ben Johnson, and offensive coordinator Declan Doyle intentionally challenged him with a demanding workload designed to accelerate his understanding of the professional game.

With one full NFL season behind him, Williams now possesses valuable experience that should allow him to process defenses more quickly. The Bears believe that greater familiarity with the offense will translate into faster decisions, improved rhythm, and greater consistency throughout games.

2. Williams Addresses Questions About His Accuracy

One of the biggest talking points surrounding Williams has been his completion percentage. Despite posting strong yardage and touchdown totals, he completed just over 58 percent of his passes during the 2025 season, ranking near the bottom among qualifying quarterbacks.

Williams has acknowledged that improving his efficiency remains one of his priorities, but he also believes the raw numbers require additional context. He explained that many incomplete passes resulted from intentional decisions to throw the football away rather than force risky throws into coverage.

By avoiding unnecessary turnovers, Williams often kept the Bears in manageable situations while trusting the offense to continue moving the chains. Although those decisions negatively affected his completion percentage, they reflected a commitment to protecting the football and giving his team the best opportunity to succeed.

Even so, the quarterback recognizes there is room for improvement. After studying the careers of quarterbacks such as Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Patrick Mahomes, Williams said he realized that increasing his completion percentage into the low-to-mid 60 percent range would represent an important step in his continued development.

3. Leadership Becoming a Bigger Focus

Beyond refining his mechanics and decision-making, Williams is also working to strengthen his leadership. As the face of the franchise, he understands that teammates closely observe how he responds during both successful and challenging moments.

A recent interaction with veteran wide receiver Kalif Raymond reinforced that responsibility. During an offseason practice, Raymond reminded Williams that everyone on the team looks to the quarterback for emotional leadership, especially when adversity arises.

The conversation left a lasting impression on Williams, who has since emphasized maintaining a calm and composed demeanor regardless of the situation. He believes displaying confidence under pressure can positively influence the entire team throughout a game.

As Chicago enters a season with growing playoff expectations, Williams’ growth as a leader may prove just as important as his statistical improvement. If he can combine greater efficiency with the poise expected of a franchise quarterback, the Bears could be well positioned to build on last year’s progress and compete at a higher level.
