The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the 2026 season at an interesting crossroads. After another early playoff exit prompted significant organizational changes, the franchise is attempting to balance a transition toward the future while continuing to rely on several cornerstone veterans.

Head coach Mike Tomlin’s departure marked the end of an era in Pittsburgh, while the arrivals of Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers signaled the organization’s desire to remain competitive immediately. Despite the attention surrounding those changes, many believe the Steelers’ fortunes will once again be determined by their defense.

That unit remains anchored by one of the NFL’s most accomplished veterans: defensive tackle Cam Heyward. Now entering his 16th professional season at 37 years old, Heyward continues to perform at a level that places him among the league’s elite.

Sports Illustrated recently reinforced that standing by ranking Heyward as the No. 8 defensive tackle in football heading into the upcoming season. For a player nearing the end of a remarkable career, the recognition serves as another testament to his consistency and longevity.

1. Defying Age and Expectations

Age has traditionally been one of the greatest challenges for NFL players, particularly those tasked with battling offensive linemen on every snap. Yet Heyward continues to defy expectations as he prepares for another season in Pittsburgh.

The veteran defensive tackle remains one of the league’s most complete interior defenders. Last season, he recorded 78 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, and a forced fumble while helping guide the Steelers back to the postseason.

Beyond traditional statistics, advanced metrics further highlight his impact. According to evaluations cited by Sports Illustrated, Heyward generated 53 quarterback pressures during the 2025 campaign, ranking among the top players at his position.

Those numbers are particularly impressive given the physical demands associated with his role. While many players experience significant decline by their mid-30s, Heyward has maintained a level of production that continues to place him in conversations alongside much younger stars.

2. A Legacy Built on Consistency

Few players in franchise history have demonstrated the sustained excellence that has defined Heyward’s career. Since entering the league in 2011, he has established himself as one of the most dependable and respected figures in the Steelers organization.

His résumé reflects that consistency. Heyward has earned six All-Pro selections, including four First Team honors, and remains one of the most decorated defensive players of his generation. Even in recent years, his performance has shown little evidence of regression.

He earned First Team All-Pro recognition in 2024 before following it with a Second Team selection in 2025. Those accolades underscore his ability to remain among the NFL’s best despite competing against players often a decade younger.

Perhaps equally important is his leadership. As Pittsburgh continues integrating younger contributors such as Joey Porter Jr. and newly acquired cornerback Jamel Dean, Heyward’s presence provides invaluable stability both on and off the field.

3. New Leadership, Familiar Expectations

The Steelers’ defense will look somewhat different this season under new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. After earning praise for his work with the Las Vegas Raiders, Graham now inherits one of the NFL’s most talented collections of defensive personnel.

Many believe Graham’s arrival could further benefit Heyward. Known for his creative schemes and ability to maximize talent, the coordinator now has the opportunity to work with established stars at every level of the defense.

Alongside T.J. Watt, Heyward remains the centerpiece of Pittsburgh’s defensive identity. Their partnership has consistently ranked among the league’s most effective combinations, and both players are expected to play major roles as the Steelers pursue another playoff berth.

The AFC North remains one of football’s toughest divisions, meaning Pittsburgh will need significant contributions from its veteran leaders if it hopes to compete for a championship. If history is any indication, Heyward appears more than capable of answering that challenge once again.
