The Arizona Cardinals are facing growing tension at the quarterback position as the organization continues to leave its starting role unresolved heading into the 2026 season. Recent comments from general manager Monti Ossenfort and head coach Mike LaFleur suggested that no firm decision has been made, fueling speculation about the team’s long-term plans.

Those remarks have been widely interpreted as a sign that Arizona is considering selecting a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft. The possibility has introduced uncertainty into a room that already includes veteran Jacoby Brissett and other experienced options.

Brissett, who stepped into a starting role last season due to Kyler Murray’s injury, has reportedly taken issue with the lack of commitment from the organization. His reaction has added another layer of complexity to an already fluid situation.

As offseason discussions continue, the Cardinals now find themselves navigating both roster evaluation and contract dynamics at one of the most important positions in football.

1. Leadership Leaves Door Open at Quarterback

Monti Ossenfort’s recent comments highlighted the team’s ongoing evaluation process rather than a definitive depth chart. He emphasized that the organization is still in the early stages of installing its system and assessing personnel. Mike LaFleur echoed a similar sentiment, indicating that no quarterback has been officially named as the starter. Both leaders suggested that the situation could remain open through training camp and into August. This lack of clarity has been interpreted as a signal that competition will extend through the offseason. It also leaves room for the team to explore external options, including potential draft selections. For a franchise attempting to stabilize its offensive identity, the absence of a clear starter underscores the transitional nature of the roster.

2. Brissett Responds Amid Contract Concerns

Jacoby Brissett’s reaction to the uncertainty has become a focal point in Arizona’s offseason narrative. Reports indicate that he may hold out from offseason activities as he seeks a contract that reflects his status as a starter. His response on social media, including a repost of the team’s comments accompanied by laughing emojis, added a public dimension to the situation. While not an official statement, it reflected frustration with the current dialogue surrounding his role. Brissett is entering the final year of a deal that will pay him just over nine million dollars, with a relatively small portion guaranteed. That structure has contributed to his push for greater financial security moving forward. At 33 years old, the veteran quarterback appears intent on maximizing what could be one of his final opportunities to secure a long-term starter-level contract.

3. Performance History Complicates Decision

Brissett’s case is supported by his production during the previous season, when he stepped in for an injured Kyler Murray and started 12 games. He delivered one of the more statistically productive seasons of his career in the process. He finished with 3,366 passing yards, a 64.9 percent completion rate, and 23 touchdown passes against eight interceptions. While those numbers reflected solid individual performance, they did not translate into team success, as the Cardinals finished with a 1–11 record in his starts. Despite the lack of wins, Brissett’s performance reinforced his ability to function as a capable NFL starter under difficult circumstances. That track record forms the basis of his current contractual expectations. However, Arizona’s roster situation complicates matters. With Gardner Minshew also in the quarterback room and the possibility of drafting a rookie, Brissett’s long-term role with the team remains uncertain.
