The United States men’s national team exited the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16, bringing an end to what had been an encouraging tournament for the host nation. After raising expectations with strong performances in the group stage and the opening knockout round, the Americans were unable to match Belgium’s intensity and efficiency when it mattered most.

Following the loss, former United States women’s national team star Carli Lloyd offered a candid assessment of the team’s performance during FOX’s post-match coverage. While recognizing the progress made throughout the tournament, Lloyd questioned the mentality and confidence displayed by the players against one of Europe’s top sides.

Her comments were especially focused on captain Christian Pulisic, who struggled to influence the match before leaving the field during the second half. As the team’s most recognizable player, Pulisic entered the tournament carrying significant expectations, but Lloyd believed he did not produce the leadership or impact needed in the biggest moment.

Although the defeat ended another World Cup campaign in the Round of 16, Lloyd emphasized that the tournament should not be viewed solely through the lens of one disappointing result. She pointed to the renewed enthusiasm surrounding the national team as evidence that there are still meaningful positives to build upon.

1. Lloyd Calls for Bigger Performances

Lloyd said she felt the United States appeared to lose the match before kickoff, describing the team’s overall approach as hesitant and lacking confidence. According to the former World Cup champion, the Americans spent much of the game reacting instead of dictating play, allowing Belgium to seize control early.

She suggested the players looked tentative in possession and struggled to display the composure necessary in a high-pressure knockout match. Against an experienced Belgian squad, those shortcomings became increasingly apparent as the game progressed.

Lloyd reserved some of her strongest criticism for Pulisic, arguing that the team’s captain failed to provide the influence expected from one of its biggest stars. She noted that while he produced flashes of quality during the tournament, those moments were too infrequent to define his overall campaign.

The former USWNT standout stressed that elite players are expected to elevate their performances in decisive matches. In her view, the United States needed more from its leaders, particularly against a world-class opponent with advancement on the line.

2. Tournament Ends on Disappointing Note

The defeat to Belgium capped another Round of 16 exit for the United States despite entering the knockout stage with growing optimism. The team had demonstrated encouraging form earlier in the competition, making the one-sided loss particularly difficult to accept.

The Americans finished the tournament with three victories and two defeats. They opened with an impressive 4-1 win over Paraguay before recording additional victories against Australia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, performances that showcased the squad’s attacking potential and defensive organization.

However, defeats to Türkiye during the group stage and Belgium in the knockout round exposed areas where the team still trails the world’s elite nations. Against stronger opposition, the United States struggled to maintain consistency and capitalize on possession in dangerous areas.

Belgium ultimately controlled the Round of 16 meeting, limiting the Americans’ attacking opportunities while taking advantage of defensive mistakes. The result ended hopes of a deeper run in front of home supporters and left players searching for answers after another early exit.

3. Building Toward the Future

Despite the disappointing finish, there were several encouraging individual performances throughout the tournament. Folarin Balogun emerged as the team’s leading scorer with three goals in his first World Cup appearance, providing optimism that the United States has found a reliable striker for future competitions.

Malik Tillman also made important contributions, finishing with two goals, while Giovanni Reyna and Auston Trusty each found the scoresheet. The development of younger players offered further evidence that the national team possesses a promising foundation moving forward.

Looking ahead, the United States is expected to evaluate every aspect of the squad as preparations begin for the next World Cup cycle. Questions surrounding roster construction, player development, and tactical adjustments will likely become central topics as the program aims to take the next step.

The road now leads toward the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will primarily be hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, with special centennial matches scheduled in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The United States will hope the lessons learned from this tournament ultimately help transform future potential into sustained success on football’s biggest stage.
