Former United States women’s national team star Carli Lloyd is standing firmly behind her assessment of Christian Pulisic despite revelations that the U.S. captain played through a significant leg injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The debate intensified after reports confirmed Pulisic suffered a bone bruise and a microfracture in his right tibia and fibula. While many fans argued the injury helped explain his underwhelming tournament, Lloyd maintained that it did not change her evaluation.

Lloyd’s original comments came after the United States’ disappointing 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16. Following the loss, she questioned whether Pulisic had delivered the type of leadership and impact expected from the team’s biggest star on the sport’s largest stage.

As discussion surrounding Pulisic’s condition spread across social media, Lloyd was asked whether she regretted her criticism. Instead of softening her stance, the two-time Women’s World Cup champion made it clear she had no intention of apologizing.

1. Lloyd Defends Her Position

Lloyd explained that her criticism was never intended to be personal. Rather, she said it was focused solely on Pulisic’s overall contribution during a tournament in which the United States fell well short of its expectations.

She emphasized that her remarks were not directed at Pulisic’s postgame interviews or his character. Instead, she pointed to the broader context leading into the World Cup, noting that he skipped last summer’s Gold Cup to prioritize recovery and preparation for the global tournament.

According to Lloyd, those circumstances naturally created higher expectations. From her perspective, a player who devoted considerable time to preparing specifically for the World Cup needed to deliver more when the tournament arrived.

Lloyd reiterated that she believed her comments reflected performance rather than personality. While acknowledging the discussion surrounding Pulisic had become emotional, she insisted her evaluation remained rooted in what she observed on the field.

2. Injury Offers New Context

The conversation shifted after reports revealed the extent of Pulisic’s injuries. Medical evaluations determined he suffered both a bone bruise and a microfracture in his lower right leg during the tournament.

Despite the seriousness of the injury, expectations remain optimistic regarding his recovery. Current reports indicate that Pulisic should be available when the upcoming Serie A season begins, allowing him to rejoin AC Milan after several weeks of rehabilitation.

The injury may also explain why Pulisic struggled to produce his usual explosive attacking play. Throughout his career, he has built his reputation on quick changes of direction, close control, and acceleration—qualities that can be significantly affected by lower-body injuries.

Even with that context, the statistics from the tournament remained modest. Pulisic recorded just one assist during the World Cup and never consistently influenced matches in the manner many supporters expected from the captain of the United States.

3. Looking Ahead for Pulisic and USMNT

The disappointing World Cup campaign has sparked broader discussions about the future of the United States men’s national team. Expectations were high entering the tournament, particularly after encouraging performances in earlier rounds, but the Round of 16 defeat left many questions unanswered.

Pulisic will undoubtedly remain central to those conversations. Even after an underwhelming tournament, he continues to be one of the most accomplished players in the national team program and is expected to play a major leadership role moving forward.

If his recovery progresses as anticipated, Pulisic will have the opportunity to regain his form with AC Milan before turning his attention back to international competition. Strong club performances could help restore confidence ahead of future tournaments.

Looking further ahead, the 2030 FIFA World Cup presents another opportunity for redemption. At just 31 years old by the time that tournament begins, Pulisic should still be capable of performing at a high level and leading another generation of American players on soccer’s biggest stage.
