The Boston Celtics have made a roster move that highlights their confidence in one of their young prospects. Rookie guard Max Shulga has been signed to a two-year standard NBA contract after spending the season on a two-way deal.

The decision was reported by ESPN insider Shams Charania, who indicated that Boston finalized the agreement Saturday. Shulga originally joined the organization after being selected with the No. 57 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, a selection the Celtics acquired from the Orlando Magic.

For Shulga, the move represents an important milestone early in his professional career. Transitioning from a two-way contract to a standard deal not only secures his place on the Celtics’ roster but also increases his salary and long-term opportunity with the team.

Boston’s decision also reflects the franchise’s continued effort to develop young talent within its system. Even though Shulga has seen limited NBA minutes so far, his progress in the developmental pipeline has been enough to convince the organization to make a more permanent commitment.

1. From Two-Way Deal to Full Roster Spot

Shulga began the season on a two-way contract, which allowed him to split time between the Celtics and their G League affiliate while continuing to develop his skills. These agreements are often used to evaluate young players and provide them with opportunities to adjust to the professional level. During his rookie season, Shulga made only brief appearances at the NBA level. He appeared in three games for Boston, averaging 1.7 minutes per contest during those limited opportunities. His statistical contributions in those appearances were minimal, as he attempted only one shot and committed two fouls in his short time on the court. Still, the Celtics viewed those moments as part of a broader developmental process rather than a measure of immediate impact. By converting his contract to a standard two-year deal, Boston has effectively promoted Shulga to a permanent roster position. The move also opens one of the team’s two-way contract spots, allowing the organization to bring in another developmental player if needed.

2. Strong Collegiate Career Built Foundation

Before entering the NBA, Shulga built a solid résumé during his collegiate career. The Ukrainian guard spent five seasons in college basketball, playing for both Utah State Aggies men’s basketball and VCU Rams men’s basketball. His most productive seasons came while playing for VCU, where he developed into one of the team’s most reliable offensive contributors. Over time, he became known for his perimeter shooting and his ability to contribute across multiple statistical categories. During the 2024–25 NCAA season, Shulga averaged 15 points, 5.9 rebounds and four assists per game. He also demonstrated strong shooting efficiency from long range, connecting on 38.7 percent of his three-point attempts. Those performances helped guide VCU to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament during his final college season. The strong showing on a national stage further boosted his reputation as a skilled guard capable of contributing at the next level.

3. Celtics Continue Strong Season

Boston’s decision to secure Shulga on a standard contract comes during a successful season for the franchise. The Celtics currently hold a 44–23 record, positioning themselves among the top teams in the Eastern Conference. They sit in second place in the standings, trailing the Detroit Pistons while remaining ahead of both the New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The team recently added another victory to its record with a win over the Washington Wizards. That result helped maintain Boston’s momentum as the regular season continues to move toward its final stretch. While Shulga is unlikely to play a major role immediately, securing his contract ensures that Boston maintains depth and developmental flexibility. The organization continues to balance its pursuit of playoff success with long-term player development.
