The Minnesota Timberwolves made one of the most talked-about moves of the NBA offseason by acquiring LaMelo Ball, and the trade has already sparked strong reactions from around the basketball world. Among those weighing in is Hall of Famer Chris Bosh, who admitted he did not expect the blockbuster deal but quickly recognized its potential impact.

Speaking in a recent video posted on social media, Bosh described the transaction as one of the offseason’s biggest surprises. While acknowledging the unexpected nature of the move, the former NBA champion praised Minnesota’s decision to add another elite playmaker alongside franchise star Anthony Edwards.

Bosh’s opinion carries considerable credibility given his experience playing on championship-caliber teams. As an 11-time All-Star and two-time NBA champion, he understands the importance of roster construction, spacing, and finding the right balance between star talent and complementary pieces.

If Bosh’s projection proves accurate, the Timberwolves could enter the new season with one of the league’s most entertaining and productive backcourts. The addition of Ball not only strengthens Minnesota offensively but also creates new possibilities for several teammates throughout the lineup.

1. Bosh Sees an Ideal Fit Beside Anthony Edwards

Bosh believes Minnesota identified a key need by acquiring another primary ball handler to play alongside Edwards. With veteran point guard Mike Conley entering the later stages of his career, adding a younger creator gives the Timberwolves another player capable of directing the offense at a high level. Ball has consistently demonstrated his ability to generate scoring opportunities for both himself and his teammates. Last season with the Charlotte Hornets, he averaged 20.1 points and 7.1 assists while serving as the centerpiece of the team’s offense despite facing heavy defensive attention. According to Bosh, Ball’s court vision should immediately benefit Minnesota’s offensive attack. His passing ability allows teammates to receive easier scoring opportunities, while his creativity forces opposing defenses to account for multiple threats instead of focusing solely on Edwards. The partnership also reunites two of the top prospects from the 2020 NBA Draft. Edwards, selected first overall, and Ball, chosen third, now have an opportunity to develop into one of the NBA’s premier backcourt combinations, blending explosive scoring with elite playmaking.

2. Ball’s Arrival Could Benefit Rudy Gobert

Bosh also pointed to another player who could gain significantly from Ball’s arrival: veteran center Rudy Gobert. Throughout his career, Ball has earned a reputation as one of the league’s most creative passers, particularly when setting up big men near the basket. With Ball frequently attacking defenses off the dribble, opposing teams will be forced to collapse into the paint. That attention could create regular opportunities for Gobert to finish alley-oops and easy passes around the rim, an area where he has consistently been effective. Bosh suggested that Gobert’s offensive production could improve as a direct result of Ball’s passing instincts. Rather than creating shots for himself, the veteran center may benefit from a steady supply of high-percentage scoring chances generated by his new teammate. If Minnesota successfully develops chemistry between Ball and Gobert, the Timberwolves could possess one of the Western Conference’s more balanced offenses. Ball’s ability to involve every teammate could make the entire starting lineup more efficient while reducing pressure on Edwards to carry the offense alone.

3. A Difficult Trade With High Expectations

Although Bosh praised the overall move, he acknowledged that Minnesota paid a meaningful price to acquire Ball. The Timberwolves traded popular forward Naz Reid to the Charlotte Hornets as part of the deal, along with Josh Green and a package of draft assets. Reid’s departure represents an emotional loss for both the organization and its fan base. The versatile big man became one of Minnesota’s most beloved players after winning the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award in 2024 and consistently providing energy and production off the bench. Bosh admitted he was disappointed to see Reid leave, describing him as one of his favorite players to watch. Even so, he believes the opportunity to acquire a player with Ball’s unique skill set justified the difficult decision, particularly given Minnesota’s championship aspirations. Looking ahead, Bosh expects the Timberwolves to become one of the NBA’s most explosive teams almost immediately. If Ball and Edwards quickly establish chemistry, Minnesota could emerge as one of the league’s most dangerous contenders with an offense capable of challenging any opponent.
