The box score told the story of a breakout night for Donovan Clingan, but the historical footnote made it even louder. In a convincing 135–119 victory over the Utah Jazz, the young center produced a stat line rarely seen in Portland Trail Blazers history.

Still only halfway through his second NBA season, Clingan has steadily carved out a full-time starting role. His presence inside has grown from situational contributor to nightly anchor, and Thursday’s performance underscored how quickly he’s developing into one of Portland’s most reliable interior forces.

Over 31 minutes, Clingan controlled the paint on both ends, scoring efficiently, dominating the glass and facilitating offense. He finished with 23 points, 18 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks while committing zero turnovers.

The outing also connected him to franchise lore, as he became the first Blazers player to record at least 20 points, 15 rebounds and five assists without a turnover since Scottie Pippen accomplished the feat in 2003 — a reminder that Portland hasn’t seen many two-way stat sheets like this in two decades.

1. Controlling the Interior

From the opening tip, Clingan established himself around the rim. He sealed defenders deep in the paint, converted second-chance opportunities and finished through contact, making Utah pay for every defensive lapse. His efficiency stood out as much as the volume. Clingan shot 8-of-12 from the field and knocked down 7-of-9 free throws, turning touches into points without forcing the action. The rebounding numbers reflected constant activity. Whether battling for offensive boards or cleaning up misses on defense, he repeatedly extended possessions and limited Utah’s opportunities. Just as important, he made smart decisions with the ball. Seven assists without a single turnover highlighted poise uncommon for a young center, showing his ability to read double teams and find open shooters.

2. Third-Quarter Surge Breaks It Open

The game itself was competitive early. Utah carried a slim 63–61 lead into halftime, matching Portland’s energy and keeping the crowd engaged. That balance vanished in the third quarter. The Blazers exploded for a 40–23 run, flipping the momentum with crisp ball movement, defensive stops and quick transition scores. Clingan anchored the stretch defensively, protecting the rim and starting fast breaks with outlet passes. His presence helped Portland dictate tempo rather than react. By the time the fourth quarter began, the gap felt decisive. Utah never fully recovered, and the Blazers maintained control down the stretch to secure the double-digit win.

3. Depth and Standings Outlook

Clingan wasn’t alone in carrying the offense. Jrue Holiday led all scorers with 31 points, adding nine rebounds and seven assists while shooting efficiently from both the field and beyond the arc. Jerami Grant chipped in 18 points, while Scoot Henderson contributed 15 points and playmaking off the dribble. Toumani Camara added 14 points and eight rebounds, and reserves Caleb Love and Vit Krejci each reached double figures. Seven players finishing with double-digit scoring illustrated the kind of balance Portland has sought all season. On nights like this, the Blazers look less dependent on one star and more like a deep, versatile unit. The victory pushed Portland to 27–29, keeping them in the thick of the Western Conference play-in picture as they head into the All-Star break. With momentum on their side, they’ll return to action next week hosting the Denver Nuggets.
