Kawhi Leonard’s anticipated return to the Toronto Raptors has been temporarily put on hold after the NBA delayed approval of the blockbuster trade involving the Los Angeles Clippers. Although both teams reached an agreement in principle, the transaction cannot be completed until the league finishes its ongoing investigation into the Clippers’ past financial dealings.

The Clippers confirmed the delay in a statement released Thursday, explaining that the league has required the Raptors’ ownership group to accept responsibility for any potential penalties connected to Leonard’s contract before the deal can officially move forward. Until that issue is resolved, the trade remains incomplete.

According to the organization, the investigation has not reached a conclusion, and both sides expect the transaction to be finalized once the NBA completes its review. The delay does not necessarily indicate wrongdoing but reflects the league’s effort to determine whether any rules were violated.

The situation has created uncertainty around one of the offseason’s biggest moves, with Leonard’s long-awaited reunion with the franchise where he captured the 2019 NBA championship now dependent on the outcome of the NBA’s investigation.

1. League Investigation Delays Trade

The Clippers stated that they agreed to send Leonard to Toronto on June 30 but later learned that the NBA would not approve the transaction under its current circumstances. League officials reportedly informed the franchise that the trade could only proceed if the Raptors accepted the possibility of future penalties tied to Leonard’s contract.

The organization emphasized that the investigation remains active and expressed confidence that the trade will eventually be completed after the review is finished. For now, however, league approval remains the final hurdle before the deal can become official.

Los Angeles also firmly rejected the central allegation at the heart of the investigation. Team officials denied claims that money was secretly directed to Leonard through financial arrangements involving the company Aspiration.

Instead, the Clippers argued that they were among several investors and business partners harmed by fraudulent actions committed by former Aspiration executive Andris Pukke? No—according to the team’s statement, former executive Joe Sanberg orchestrated the fraud, later receiving a 14-year prison sentence. The franchise maintains that it was a victim rather than a participant in any improper conduct.

2. Financial Questions Under Review

The NBA’s investigation originated from reporting released in 2025 by journalist Pablo Torre on his podcast. His reporting referenced internal documents alleging that Clippers owner Steve Ballmer invested approximately $50 million into Aspiration through a personal limited liability company in September 2021.

That same month, the Clippers announced a major sponsorship agreement with Aspiration worth roughly $300 million, making the financial technology company the first founding partner of the Intuit Dome. The timing of those transactions became a central focus of the league’s review.

Additional reporting also raised questions about other financial arrangements allegedly connected to Leonard, including a reported endorsement agreement valued at approximately $28 million. Investigators have examined whether those agreements could have been used to provide additional compensation outside the NBA’s salary cap rules.

The NBA has not announced any findings, nor has it publicly concluded that league rules were violated. The investigation remains ongoing, leaving the proposed Leonard trade temporarily suspended while officials continue gathering and reviewing evidence.

3. Leonard Awaits Resolution

Despite the investigation, Leonard remained eligible to play throughout the 2025-26 NBA season with the Clippers. The league never restricted his playing status while its review continued, allowing him to remain active as investigators examined the allegations.

Earlier this offseason, reports indicated that Leonard and his uncle and longtime business adviser, Dennis Robertson, participated in interviews with NBA investigators. Those discussions were part of the league’s broader effort to understand the financial arrangements surrounding Leonard’s relationship with the Clippers.

For the Raptors, the delay postpones what would be one of the most significant reunions in recent franchise history. Leonard led Toronto to its first NBA championship in 2019 before departing for Los Angeles during free agency, making his potential return one of the league’s most closely watched offseason developments.

Until the NBA reaches a final decision, both organizations remain in waiting, with the future of the blockbuster trade resting on the outcome of the league’s investigation into the Clippers’ business relationship with Aspiration.
