Ben Johnson’s ascent to becoming one of the NFL’s most respected coaches has been years in the making. After guiding the Chicago Bears to an NFC North title and ending the franchise’s four-year playoff drought in his first season as head coach, Johnson’s reputation as an offensive innovator continues to grow across the league.

While many fans have only recently become familiar with Johnson’s coaching success, those who worked alongside him during his early years in the NFL say his rise comes as little surprise. One of those individuals is Washington Commanders offensive coordinator David Blough, who developed a close friendship with Johnson during their time together in Detroit.

Blough recently reflected on the origins of their relationship during an appearance on “NFL Spotlight with Ari Meirov,” recalling how a chance meeting outside a team hotel in 2019 sparked a connection that has endured throughout their respective careers.

The story offers a glimpse into Johnson’s approach long before he became a head coach. It also highlights the qualities that have helped transform him into one of the league’s most sought-after football minds.

1. An Unlikely Friendship Begins

Blough and Johnson arrived in Detroit under very different circumstances. Blough joined the Lions as an unheralded quarterback hoping to establish himself in the league, while Johnson entered the organization as a quality control coach after spending time with the Miami Dolphins.

Their friendship began almost immediately. According to Blough, Johnson noticed a Purdue Football bag tag while they were staying at the team hotel and struck up a conversation. Johnson asked whether Blough had played for longtime coach John Shoop, revealing that he had also worked under Shoop during his time at North Carolina.

That shared connection quickly became the foundation of a lasting relationship. As both men attempted to learn offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell’s system, they found themselves navigating the challenges of adapting to a new environment together.

Blough recalled that Johnson routinely went beyond the responsibilities outlined in his job description. Despite not serving as Detroit’s quarterbacks coach, Johnson made a habit of reviewing the entire game plan with Blough every Saturday night, helping the young quarterback prepare for the week ahead.

2. A Coach Defined by Preparation

The stories shared by Blough paint a picture of a coach whose commitment to preparation was evident long before his success in Chicago. Johnson’s willingness to invest additional time in helping others left a lasting impression on those around him.

Blough noted that Johnson frequently worked extraordinarily long hours, often dedicating more than 100 hours per week to his responsibilities. That level of commitment, he said, eventually became one of Johnson’s defining characteristics as a coach.

Beyond the hours themselves, Blough emphasized Johnson’s attention to detail. He credited the future Bears coach with helping him better understand the complexities of an NFL offense during a critical period of his playing career.

Those lessons have remained with Blough as he transitioned into coaching. Now serving as the offensive coordinator for the Commanders, he says many of the principles he applies today can be traced back to the time he spent learning alongside Johnson in Detroit.

3. Success Comes Into Focus

Johnson’s journey from quality control coach to NFL head coach has been marked by steady progression. After building a reputation as one of the league’s brightest offensive minds, he finally received the opportunity to lead his own team in Chicago.

His impact was immediate. The Bears emerged as one of the NFC’s most improved teams, capturing the division title and returning to the postseason for the first time in several years. Their success reinforced what many around the league had believed for some time: Johnson was ready for the challenge.

For Blough, watching his longtime friend succeed has been especially rewarding. He described Johnson’s achievements as the product of years of unseen work, noting that the countless hours spent preparing eventually found their way into the spotlight.

The story also serves as a reminder of how relationships formed early in NFL careers can leave lasting impressions. Years after meeting outside a Detroit hotel, Blough and Johnson now occupy prominent positions on opposing sidelines, each helping shape the next generation of offensive football in the league.
