The Dallas Cowboys enter the offseason with a clear imbalance to address after a 2025 campaign defined by offensive success but defensive shortcomings that ultimately kept them out of the playoffs and behind the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East race.

Despite boasting one of the league’s most productive offenses, Dallas struggled defensively, finishing among the weakest units in the NFL. That inconsistency proved decisive in tight games and shaped the team’s offseason priorities.

With the No. 12 overall pick in the NFL Draft, and potential flexibility to move higher, the Cowboys are evaluating ways to reinforce their defense. One name increasingly linked to their plans is Caleb Downs, the standout safety from Ohio State.

As Dallas prepares for roster changes under owner Jerry Jones’ aggressive team-building approach, Downs has emerged as a potential cornerstone addition capable of reshaping the identity of the defense.

1. Defensive Playmaking Becomes a Priority

One of the defining issues for Dallas in 2025 was the absence of consistent defensive playmakers. The team often struggled to generate turnovers or momentum-shifting stops in critical moments. The void was particularly noticeable after the departure of former star defender Micah Parsons, who had previously provided a weekly disruptive presence capable of altering games on his own. Downs is viewed as a potential answer to that gap. While he does not replicate Parsons’ pass-rushing impact, he offers versatility as a defensive back who can affect both passing lanes and run support. At Ohio State, Downs recorded six interceptions and four forced fumbles, showcasing his instincts and physicality. His ability to diagnose plays quickly and react decisively has made him one of the most highly regarded defenders in the draft class.

2. Secondary Versatility and Defensive Depth Needs

Beyond pass rush concerns, Dallas enters the offseason with significant uncertainty in its secondary. The Cowboys ranked among the league’s weakest defenses largely due to breakdowns in coverage and lack of depth in the back seven. Recent additions such as Jalen Thompson and Cobie Durant have helped stabilize the unit, but questions remain about long-term consistency and versatility across roles. Downs’ versatility is a major factor in his appeal. While he projects primarily as a safety alongside players like Malik Hooker, he also has the skill set to play nickel corner in sub-packages. That flexibility is increasingly valuable in today’s NFL, where hybrid defensive backs are often required to match up against diverse offensive formations and motion-heavy schemes.

3. Building a Stronger Defensive Core

Dallas does have foundational pieces in place. The addition of Quinnen Williams at defensive tackle strengthens the interior, while linebacker DeMarvion Overshown offers emerging talent at the second level. Together, those pieces form the early structure of what the Cowboys hope will become a more balanced defense. The goal is to build a stronger “spine” through the middle of the field. Recent championship defenses around the league have highlighted the importance of that structure. Teams such as the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks have relied heavily on dominant interior linemen and versatile linebackers to anchor their units. New defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who has experience working with top-tier defensive systems, is expected to help integrate new talent like Downs into a more cohesive scheme. While one player will not fix every issue, Dallas believes adding a high-impact safety could elevate the entire unit.
