The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2026 season with one of the NFL’s most dangerous wide receiver combinations, featuring established star CeeDee Lamb alongside explosive playmaker George Pickens. The duo gives quarterback support and offensive flexibility that few teams can match, but their success could eventually create a challenging financial situation.
Lamb has already secured his place as one of the league’s elite receivers. The five-time Pro Bowl selection signed a four-year extension worth $136 million in 2024, keeping him under contract through the 2028 season and making him a central part of Dallas’ offensive future.
Pickens, meanwhile, entered Dallas and immediately made a major impact. After arriving with high expectations, he delivered a standout season that earned him his first Pro Bowl selection and strengthened his case for a long-term deal.
While having two elite receivers is a luxury for any team, it also creates difficult decisions when both players reach the point of contract negotiations. An NFL insider recently suggested that a major extension for Pickens could influence Lamb’s own approach to future discussions.
1. Pickens’ Rise Creates New Questions
Pickens’ performance in Dallas quickly changed the conversation around the Cowboys’ receiving group. His combination of size, athletic ability, and big-play skill gave the offense another dangerous weapon alongside Lamb. During the 2025 season, Pickens recorded 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns, proving he could handle a major role in a high-level passing attack. His production placed him among the league’s most impactful receivers. That success could eventually lead to a significant payday. Since Pickens is currently playing under the franchise tag, the Cowboys will eventually need to determine whether they want to make a long-term commitment. The challenge for Dallas is balancing financial investment with roster construction. Paying two elite receivers at the top of the market could create limitations elsewhere, especially as the team attempts to remain competitive across multiple seasons.
2. Lamb’s Situation Becomes Important
NFL insider Albert Breer noted that if Dallas signs Pickens to a long-term contract, the timing could become important. A potential extension discussion could arrive around the same period when Lamb is entering another stage of his career. Breer explained that Lamb and Pickens would both be in their prime years, making the idea of keeping the duo together appealing for the Cowboys. From a football perspective, having both receivers under contract would provide stability and offensive firepower. However, the financial side creates uncertainty. If Pickens were to receive a contract approaching the highest levels at the position, Lamb could potentially view that as a reason to seek additional compensation. Lamb’s current deal already places him among the league’s highest-paid receivers, but NFL contracts continue to rise. A strong season from Lamb could strengthen his argument for another adjustment in the future.
3. Cowboys Must Balance Short and Long Term
The Cowboys’ front office will eventually have to decide how aggressively it wants to invest in its receiver group. Keeping both players would give Dallas one of the NFL’s strongest offensive foundations, but it would require careful financial planning. Lamb remains a proven star and continues to produce at a high level. In 2025, he played in 14 games and finished with 75 receptions, 1,077 receiving yards, and three touchdowns despite dealing with a limited season. The possibility of having Lamb and Pickens together through 2028 presents an exciting opportunity for Dallas. Few teams can match that level of talent at the receiver position, and maintaining continuity could benefit the offense. Still, contract negotiations in the NFL are often influenced by timing, market value, and individual performance. If Pickens earns a record-level extension, the Cowboys may need to prepare for difficult conversations with Lamb as well.
