The Chicago Cubs have experienced a season defined by momentum swings, making consistency one of the club’s biggest challenges during the 2026 campaign. Despite remaining firmly in the National League playoff race, the team has struggled to sustain long stretches of winning baseball, alternating between impressive performances and frustrating setbacks.

Manager Craig Counsell has maintained a steady approach throughout those fluctuations. Now in his third season leading the Cubs and his 12th as a major league manager, Counsell has consistently stressed the importance of staying focused over the course of baseball’s demanding 162-game schedule.

Speaking during Chicago’s series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Counsell reflected on the team’s uneven season and explained why he believes the Cubs remain in a favorable position despite the inconsistency. He pointed to injuries and the natural challenges of a long season as factors that have influenced the club’s performance.

While the Cubs have not matched the consistency that fueled last year’s successful campaign, the organization remains confident it can compete down the stretch. With plenty of games still remaining, Chicago hopes to build momentum as it chases another postseason appearance.

1. Counsell Stresses Patience Through the Season

Counsell has developed a reputation as one of baseball’s most even-tempered managers, and that philosophy has remained unchanged throughout the 2026 season. Rather than becoming discouraged by alternating stretches of victories and defeats, he has emphasized maintaining perspective during a marathon schedule.

During his interview, Counsell acknowledged that every season presents different obstacles. He described the Cubs as a team that has been particularly streaky this year, noting that periods of strong play have often been followed by equally difficult stretches.

The veteran manager also pointed to injuries as one reason the team has struggled to establish lasting momentum. Player absences have forced adjustments throughout the season, requiring different combinations in both the lineup and pitching staff as Chicago worked to remain competitive.

Even with those challenges, Counsell expressed confidence that the Cubs remain in a solid position. His message centered on approaching each game individually, trusting that consistent preparation and execution will eventually produce positive results over the remainder of the season.

2. Offensive Struggles Continue Against Cardinals

Chicago’s latest defeat illustrated many of the issues that have contributed to its inconsistent campaign. The Cubs were shut out 3-0 by the Cardinals, extending another frustrating stretch in which the offense struggled to generate timely scoring opportunities.

St. Louis established control early by scoring in the opening inning before adding insurance runs later in the game. Chicago, meanwhile, found it difficult to mount sustained rallies, finishing with only five hits across 30 at-bats while failing to capitalize on its limited offensive chances.

The performance reflected a recurring concern for the Cubs during several of their losses this season. While the pitching staff has often kept games competitive, inconsistent production at the plate has made it difficult for the club to overcome even modest deficits.

Counsell and his coaching staff will likely continue focusing on offensive consistency as one of the team’s primary objectives. Finding greater balance between pitching, defense, and run production could be the key to transforming an inconsistent club into a more reliable contender during the second half.

3. Cubs Remain in the Playoff Hunt

Despite their recent loss, the Cubs continue to occupy a strong position in the National League Central standings. Entering the latter stages of the first half, Chicago holds a 49-40 record, placing the team second in the division.

The Cubs remain ahead of both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates, although they continue to trail the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers. The standings suggest that Chicago remains firmly in contention, but every series carries added importance as the race tightens.

The upcoming finale against the Cardinals provides an immediate opportunity to regain momentum. Securing a victory before moving on to the next stretch of the schedule would help the Cubs avoid losing additional ground while reinforcing Counsell’s emphasis on responding quickly after difficult performances.

With several months remaining in the regular season, Chicago still has ample time to establish greater consistency. If the Cubs can remain healthier and generate more dependable offensive production, they could strengthen their position as legitimate postseason contenders while pursuing another successful campaign under Counsell’s leadership.
