Argentina’s hopes of defending their World Cup title were tested to the limit in an unforgettable Round of 32 encounter, but the reigning champions ultimately survived with a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over Cape Verde in Miami. What appeared to be a favorable knockout matchup quickly evolved into one of the tournament’s most gripping contests.

The decisive moment arrived in the 111th minute when defender Cristian Romero rose above the Cape Verde defense to meet a perfectly delivered corner from Lionel Messi. Romero’s header forced the ball toward goal before a final deflection off Cape Verde defender Diney Borges carried it into the net, giving Argentina the lead they would not surrender.

Although the winning goal was officially ruled an own goal, Romero’s aerial challenge and Messi’s precise delivery proved to be the combination that finally ended Cape Verde’s determined resistance. Their partnership produced the breakthrough after more than 110 minutes of relentless competition.

The result preserved Argentina’s pursuit of consecutive World Cup titles while ending a remarkable run for Cape Verde, whose fearless performance pushed the tournament favorites to the brink of one of the biggest upsets in recent World Cup history.

1. Messi Leads the Attack as Cape Verde Responds

Argentina took control midway through the opening half when Lionel Messi produced another memorable finish in the 29th minute. The captain calmly found the net with his trademark left-footed strike, continuing his outstanding tournament and giving the defending champions an early advantage.

The goal carried added significance beyond the scoreline. It marked Messi’s 20th career World Cup goal and his seventh of the current tournament, moving him ahead of Kylian Mbappé in the race for the Golden Boot. It also extended his remarkable streak of scoring in eight consecutive World Cup matches.

Despite falling behind, Cape Verde remained composed and refused to abandon its game plan. The tournament debutants continued pressing forward with confidence and were rewarded in the 59th minute when Deroy Duarte found the equalizer, sending a clear message that they would not be intimidated by the defending champions.

Cape Verde’s resilience was matched by an outstanding performance from veteran goalkeeper Vozinha. The 40-year-old repeatedly frustrated Argentina with crucial saves throughout the match, including an impressive stop on one of Messi’s dangerous free kicks, helping force the contest beyond regulation.

2. Extra Time Delivers Constant Twists

The additional period brought even more drama as both teams continued searching for the breakthrough. Argentina regained the lead after another dangerous corner from Messi found defender Lisandro Martínez, who struck the ball cleanly into the net to restore the champions’ advantage.

However, Cape Verde answered once again, refusing to allow Argentina any sense of comfort. In the 103rd minute, Sidny Lopes Cabral produced one of the finest goals of the tournament, curling a superb effort beyond Emiliano Martínez to level the match for a second time.

That stunning equalizer reignited belief among the underdogs and increased the pressure on Argentina, whose hopes of retaining the World Cup suddenly looked uncertain. Every attack carried enormous importance as both sides searched desperately for a decisive moment.

With momentum swinging back and forth, the match became a showcase of determination, composure, and endurance. Argentina controlled possession for extended stretches, but Cape Verde’s disciplined defending and willingness to counterattack ensured the contest remained evenly balanced deep into extra time.

3. Romero Delivers the Defining Moment

As penalties appeared to be approaching, Argentina finally found the breakthrough they had been chasing. Messi stepped up to take another corner, delivering a dangerous cross into the heart of the penalty area where Cristian Romero timed his leap perfectly.

Romero powered his header toward goal before Cape Verde defender Diney Borges attempted to intervene. The ball deflected off Borges and crossed the line, with the goal officially credited as an own goal, but Romero’s decisive challenge created the opportunity that ultimately settled the contest.

The victory highlighted Argentina’s ability to remain composed during the tournament’s most difficult moments. Although the performance was far from flawless, the defending champions once again demonstrated why they remain among the favorites, finding a winning solution despite repeated setbacks throughout the evening.

Cape Verde exited the competition with its reputation significantly enhanced after coming within minutes of eliminating the world’s top-ranked national team. Argentina, meanwhile, advanced to face Egypt in the Round of 16, keeping alive its ambition of securing back-to-back World Cup championships behind the leadership of Messi and the resilience of a battle-tested squad.
