The WNBA has remained under intense public attention in recent weeks as discussions surrounding officiating, player treatment, and the league’s continued growth have dominated headlines. As interest in the league continues to climb, many fans and analysts have called for greater transparency from league leadership.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert was expected to address some of those topics during a scheduled appearance on The Dan Patrick Show. The interview was viewed as an opportunity for the commissioner to discuss several of the league’s biggest storylines while responding to questions from one of sports media’s most recognizable hosts.

Instead, the interview never took place. According to Dan Patrick, Engelbert canceled the appearance shortly before it was expected to begin, prompting the veteran broadcaster to publicly criticize the decision during his program.

Patrick argued that the interview would have provided a fair platform for meaningful discussion rather than confrontation. He maintained that the decision to withdraw represented a missed opportunity for the league to engage with fans during an important period in its development.

1. Planned Interview Ends Abruptly

Patrick explained that his production team had spent considerable time preparing for the interview and remained on standby after his daily show had concluded. According to the longtime broadcaster, the commissioner had planned to join the program following another scheduled meeting.

He said the show’s staff waited for nearly two hours, believing Engelbert would appear once her prior commitments had concluded. The expectation was that the conversation would proceed as originally arranged.

Instead, Patrick said he was informed that the interview would no longer happen. According to his account, representatives for the commissioner relayed that the WNBA’s communications staff preferred she not participate in the appearance.

The unexpected cancellation surprised Patrick, particularly because the interview had already been scheduled and preparations had been completed. He questioned why the appearance was called off after both sides had seemingly agreed to move forward.

2. More Than Just Officiating

Patrick emphasized that the interview was never intended to focus solely on the recent criticism surrounding officiating. While acknowledging that officiating has become one of the league’s biggest talking points, he said there were several additional subjects he hoped to discuss.

Among those topics was the WNBA’s ongoing expansion efforts, an issue that has generated significant interest as the league continues to add new franchises and grow its national profile. Patrick suggested that expansion alone would have made for a meaningful conversation with the commissioner.

He also noted that Caitlin Clark’s impact on the league was expected to be part of the discussion. Clark has remained at the center of national attention throughout the season, with many debates involving officiating, physical play, television ratings, and the WNBA’s continued rise in popularity.

According to Patrick, representatives for Engelbert had previously indicated that no discussion topics would be considered off limits. That understanding made the last-minute cancellation even more difficult for him to understand.

3. Patrick Calls for Greater Transparency

During his remarks, Patrick argued that leaders of major professional sports leagues must be willing to answer difficult questions, particularly during periods of heightened public attention. He said accountability is an important part of leading a growing sports organization.

The veteran broadcaster stressed that his program would have provided a respectful environment for discussion rather than an adversarial interview. He maintained that his goal was to give Engelbert an opportunity to explain the league’s perspective on several important issues.

Patrick also suggested that increased media engagement would benefit the WNBA as it continues experiencing unprecedented visibility. With more fans, sponsors, and broadcasters paying attention to the league than ever before, he believes open communication has become increasingly valuable.

Although the interview ultimately did not happen, Patrick said he remains willing to host Engelbert in the future. He expressed hope that the commissioner will eventually address the league’s biggest questions publicly, allowing fans to hear directly from its leadership during a pivotal moment for the WNBA.
