Dawson Odums is poised to take over as head coach at Bowie State, according to multiple reports, marking a return to coaching after a brief hiatus. The veteran coach brings a wealth of experience from both the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. His hiring could signal a fresh start for Bowie State’s football program as they look to build on recent seasons.

Odums most recently led Norfolk State, stepping away after four seasons with the Spartans. His tenure featured highs and lows, including a breakthrough 6-5 season in 2021 but struggles in 2024 that saw Norfolk State finish last in several key statistical categories. Despite the challenges, Odums remains a respected figure in HBCU football circles.

Prior to Norfolk State, Odums spent nearly a decade at Southern University, where he earned SWAC Coach of the Year honors and captured multiple division titles. His tenure there included one SWAC championship and consistent success in conference play, demonstrating his ability to build winning programs.

With National Signing Day approaching on February 4, a formal announcement on Odums’s hiring is expected soon. If confirmed, he will return to the sideline equipped with extensive experience in program building, player development, and leadership.

1. Norfolk State Tenure

Odums joined Norfolk State as the 18th head coach in program history on April 21, 2021. In his four seasons with the Spartans, he compiled a 15-30 overall record. While the tenure included challenges, it also featured highlights, including a 6-5 campaign in 2021 with a six-game winning streak—the longest for Norfolk State since 1984. The 2021 season marked Norfolk State’s first winning record since 2007, and Odums earned praise for navigating roster limitations and building competitive performances in the MEAC. His leadership during that campaign showed his capacity to elevate a program in transition. However, the 2024 season proved difficult. Norfolk State finished 4-8 overall and 2-3 in MEAC play, ranking last in passing offense and near the bottom in passing defense. Injuries and eligibility issues affected key players, including starting quarterback Otto Kuhns, who missed early games due to an NCAA ruling. Junior college transfer Jalen Daniels was forced into the starting role and struggled throughout the season, finishing last in the conference with 1,333 passing yards and 11 touchdowns. Despite the setbacks, Odums maintained a reputation for resilience and player development.

2. Success at Southern University

Before Norfolk State, Odums spent nearly a decade at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he built one of the SWAC’s most successful programs. Serving as head coach from 2012 to 2021, Odums posted a 63-35 overall record and a 29-6 mark in SWAC play over his final five seasons. His tenure included a SWAC championship in 2013, along with four SWAC West Division titles in 2013, 2014, 2018, and 2019. Odums earned SWAC Coach of the Year honors in 2013, reflecting his impact on the program and conference. Odums was known for his ability to recruit talent effectively, develop players, and sustain consistent winning seasons, laying a foundation of success for Southern University. His experience navigating both competitive play and administrative duties positions him as a strong candidate to lead Bowie State. The successes at Southern highlight Odums’s strengths in program-building, mentoring young athletes, and competing at a high level in collegiate football, all of which will be critical for his next role.

3. Looking Ahead at Bowie State

If officially hired, Odums will take over Bowie State with a wealth of experience and a clear vision for program development. The timing aligns with National Signing Day on February 4, allowing him to immediately engage in recruiting and roster planning. Bowie State will benefit from Odums’s proven ability to develop players and manage teams in competitive conferences. His experience navigating both winning seasons and challenging campaigns gives him perspective that could elevate the Bulldogs’ performance. Odums’s return to coaching comes after a year away from the sidelines, but his track record suggests he can make an immediate impact. For Bowie State, the hire represents both stability and ambition as the program seeks to compete at a higher level. As the announcement nears, expectations are high that Odums will bring leadership, experience, and strategic insight to a program ready for growth in the upcoming 2026 season.
